Step Increases
Child Welfare Advocates are eligible for incremental pay increases based on tenure and successful completion of training programs.

WHAT DOES A CHILD WELFARE ADVOCATE DO?

A Child Welfare Advocate provides essential support and guidance to families and children in need. This role demands strong organizational skills and critical thinking abilities. Advocates assess safety and risk factors while collaborating with families, agencies, and the judicial system for effective case management. The responsibilities of a Child Welfare Advocate include, but are not limited to:

Responding to reports of child abuse and neglect Evaluating child safety and associated risks Conducting interviews and collecting relevant information Engaging with families and children in various settings Participating in court proceedings Developing and implementing case plans Drafting professional reports and maintaining documentation Coordinating and overseeing service delivery Facilitating the placement and transportation of children as necessary Managing cases within designated jurisdictions Utilizing departmental software for case management

Flexibility in work hours may be required, including potential overtime, weekends, and holidays.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES ARE HELPFUL?

Knowledge of:
Confidentiality principles; behavioral modification techniques; conflict resolution; counseling methods; interviewing strategies; child development; family dynamics; indicators of mental health issues; and child welfare practices. Proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite); mobile technology; digital scheduling tools; and video conferencing platforms.

Skill in:
Building and maintaining professional relationships; effective communication; information gathering; demonstrating professional conduct; time management; keen observational skills; cultural sensitivity; managing high-stress situations; adaptability; and independent decision-making.

Ability to:
Complete tasks thoroughly; take initiative; analyze and resolve work-related challenges; recognize and address substance abuse issues; prepare detailed documentation; and effectively manage data within a computer system.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CHILD WELFARE ADVOCATE?

A Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited institution, or four years of relevant experience in a related role.

Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Candidates operating a vehicle for state business must possess a valid driver's license and meet all training and record check requirements.

Selected candidates must successfully complete a written examination, background check, and other necessary evaluations.
