Job Overview

Position Summary

The Aquatic Fitness Instructor is tasked with leading a diverse range of group exercise sessions within both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities. This role requires guiding participants through effective and safe workout routines tailored to their individual fitness levels. All classes should adhere to the standards established by the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) or a comparable organization. The instructor operates under the guidance of the Aquatics Coordinator.

The Township of Upper St. Clair offers a wide array of recreational services to its members and visitors, including fitness programs, swimming activities, seasonal camps, youth initiatives, programs for older adults, and more.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to exercise protocols set by the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) or equivalent.
  • Facilitate exercises that are suitable for the fitness levels and physical capabilities of participants.
  • Provide modifications for exercises that may not be suitable for all attendees.
  • Coordinate with fellow aquatic instructors, lifeguards, and facility personnel regarding the need for additional support or equipment.
  • Inform participants and enforce facility regulations.
  • Suggest additional aquatic or land-based exercise classes that may enhance participant experience.
  • Complete necessary documentation and reports in a timely manner.
  • Participate in scheduled training sessions.

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess and maintain valid CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
  • Understanding of cardiovascular and resistance training techniques applicable in aquatic environments.
  • Familiarity with proper exercise methodologies and progression.
  • Ability to engage with various age demographics.
  • Capability to follow and deliver both verbal and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Punctuality and responsibility in notifying supervisors of absences.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  • Capacity to perform job duties throughout the scheduled workday.
  • Skill in managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Focus and concentration despite potential distractions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old and possess a comprehensive understanding of exercise application in aquatic settings. Candidates should be capable of adapting exercises for individuals with medical conditions or special requirements. Certification from the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) or a similar body is preferred.

Equipment Utilized

  • Standard aquatic exercise equipment.
