The role involves practicing medicine under the supervision of a physician, which includes performing examinations and prescribing medications. In the physician-physician assistant (PA) dynamic, PAs maintain a degree of independence in medical decision-making and deliver a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Responsibilities may span various primary care fields such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, as well as surgical and surgical subspecialties. Educational, research, and administrative duties may also be included.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments, evaluate health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and manage illnesses, including administering injections and suturing. Collaborate with physicians as necessary and refer complex cases outside the PA's scope of practice.
- Ensure continuity of care by monitoring treatment plans.
- Assess patient inquiries and prioritize health concerns. Respond to emergencies, including performing CPR when required.
- Provide counseling to patients and families regarding preventive health measures.
- Accurately document patient interactions and care in medical records, and may assist in maintaining departmental statistical databases for research initiatives.
- A Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of an accredited physician assistant program.
- A minimum of four years of healthcare experience prior to entering the PA program, along with at least one year of experience as a PA, ideally in a clinical environment.
Ability to tackle practical challenges and manage various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting diverse instructions presented in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule formats.
Technical Proficiency
To excel in this position, candidates should possess a strong understanding of computer information systems.
