Job Overview

Position Title: Bus Driver

Reports To: Administrator of Transportation and Operations

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Compensation: Starting pay at $17.43 with a 5% increase after 90 days.

Role Objective: To deliver safe and reliable transportation services for families and children. The ideal candidate should possess flexibility to work Monday through Thursday from 10 AM to 1:30 PM, with potential for longer hours due to field trips. The average weekly commitment is 16 hours, with some weeks requiring additional hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safe transportation for children and families, maintaining the safety of all passengers.
  • Verify that both driver and passengers utilize appropriate safety restraints.
  • Manage passenger behavior to ensure a respectful environment.
  • Transport children to and from designated programs.
  • Facilitate transportation for special activities, including medical appointments and field trips, in collaboration with Head Start staff.
  • Communicate with parents regarding estimated arrival and return times, and maintain an updated route schedule for substitute drivers.
  • Maintain contact with students until they are safely handed over to staff upon arrival.
  • Keep accurate records of bus attendance, routes, seating arrangements, evacuation drills, and mileage logs.
  • Report any incidents or damages to the Administrator of Operations and Transportation immediately.
  • Assist with miscellaneous tasks when not actively providing transportation, such as answering phones and supporting classroom staff.
  • Familiarize oneself with and implement school readiness goals.
  • Participate in relevant training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Report any concerning observations as outlined by the Child Abuse and Neglect plan.
  • Maintain knowledge of Head Start performance standards.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other tasks as assigned or requested.
  • Occasional travel to various sites may be required.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, with annual renewal within the first year of employment.
  • Possession of a minimum Class C License with P & S endorsement.

Work Environment: The working conditions are generally favorable, though exposure to moderate noise from children is common.

Physical Demands: The role requires regular standing, walking, sitting, balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Occasionally, the employee may need to lift or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision of 20 inches or less and distance vision of 20 feet or less.
