Merit Board Investigator

The Cook County Sheriff's Office is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Merit Board Investigator to join our team. As a Merit Board Investigator, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive background investigations to determine the eligibility of potential sworn employees of the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct thorough and comprehensive background investigations for potential sworn employees of the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
- Produce files used by the Cook County Merit Board to determine eligibility for certification as a Correctional Officer or Deputy Sheriff.
- Ensure all required documentation is submitted by applicants.
- Review and validate authenticity of documentation submitted by applicants.
- Conduct criminal history checks through various law enforcement agencies.
- Ensure applicants have passed all prescribed testing, including written examination, physical ability, drug testing, and fingerprint requirements.
- Prepare typewritten documents and reports, including Investigative Summary Reports.
- Provide periodic updates to supervisors to discuss progress and/or problems.
- Participate in career fairs, job fairs, and college fairs as a representative of the Cook County Sheriff's Merit Board.
- Monitor and proctor entry-level examinations, physical ability testing, and other examinations as needed.
- Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting investigative activities.
- Knowledge of professional investigative techniques and methods.
- Ability to quickly grasp and utilize policies, protocols, systems, and procedures of the Cook County Merit Board and the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
- Ability to understand and interpret law enforcement agencies' criminal background reports.
- Ability to administer and/or coordinate investigative activities.
- Ability to use a computer with working knowledge of software programs used in background investigations.
- Detail-oriented with legible handwriting and proficiency in spelling.
- Ability to meet prescribed deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and professionalism.
- Ability to travel to work assignments to conduct applicant interviews.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and handle sensitive and restricted information with discretion.
- Health Insurance Program - Health insurance coverage includes medical, dental, and vision care for employees and their eligible dependents.
- Holidays - Twelve (12) holidays are granted in each fiscal year.
- Sick Leave - Earned and accrued at the rate of one (1) day for each month of service, up to 175 working days.
- Vacation Leave - Earned and accrued, with opportunities to accrue up to 10 days within the fiscal year.
- Personal Days - Earned and accrued, up to a total of four (4) personal days per fiscal year.
- Life Insurance - Basic term life insurance, equal to one (1) times the employee's annual salary, is offered at no cost.
- Pension Plan - Employees contribute to the Cook County Pension Fund and earn a prescribed percentage for each year of service.
- Deferred Compensation Program - Employees may elect to enroll in a deferred compensation plan, a tax-deferred plan used as a supplemental retirement option.
