This is a senior leadership position within the Life Underwriting department at USAA, reporting directly to the Chief Life Underwriter. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of underwriting professionals in setting and implementing life insurance underwriting policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Team Management: Provide day-to-day supervision and management support for the Life Company underwriting department, including building, managing, and developing high-performing teams.
- Underwriting Policy and Procedure Development: Create and provide oversight and supervision of internal underwriting operating guidelines and procedures in support of mortality management policy.
- Medical Underwriting: Establish medical underwriting policies and practices in conjunction with Chief Life Underwriter and Medical Directors.
- Complex Case Management: Provide executive thought leadership on complex and unique underwriting cases and contestable claims.
- Trend Analysis: Oversee and conduct ad-hoc mortality and risk classification trend analyses.
- Project Sponsorship: Sponsor and oversee the underwriting innovation journey, providing oversight and accountability for delivering defined benefits while staying within budget and timeline parameters.
- Automation and Technology: Lead the development of the Life Underwriting Policy team toward optimization of automated underwriting decision-making, and monitor existing underwriting automation platform for performance and controls.
- Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with legislation and regulation regarding life insurance underwriting policies, practices, and procedures, and identify and mitigate risks associated with business activities.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals.
- Education: Bachelor's Degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- Experience: 10 years of life insurance underwriting experience with in-depth understanding of medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles and practices.
- Leadership Experience: 4 years of people leadership experience in a life insurance underwriting function.
- Business Acumen: Executive-level business acumen in the areas of underwriting policy, innovation, and life insurance industry practices.
- Technical Skills: Deep technical knowledge of underwriting systems, experience with underwriting rules engine and rules management, and experience with electronic health record integration.
- Certifications: Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) and Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).
USAA offers a competitive salary range of $163,880.00-294,980.00, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, 401(k), pension, life insurance, parental benefits, adoption assistance, paid time off program with paid holidays, and various wellness programs.
