Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist PRN provides advanced-level respiratory care to patients, diagnosing, evaluating, treating, managing, and controlling cardiopulmonary system deficiencies or abnormalities within the prescription of the ordering physician. This position acts as a resource to the CRT staff, responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership according to departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol, obtaining arterial gases and overseeing equipment operation for optimal patient care.
  • Initiates Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria and interventions based on assessment interpretations.
  • Administers medications in a timely and safe manner, evaluating effects and re-evaluating as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of assigned patients' overall condition, communicating with physicians and nurses, and making recommendations for patient care.
  • Teaches patients and families self-care techniques and modalities, recognizing educational needs related to health promotion and wellness.
  • Completes documentation according to departmental standards, accurately documenting productivity information and monitoring supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives, identifying potential areas for improvement and safety hazards.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an AMA-approved program for Respiratory Therapy.
  • Current license for Respiratory Therapy in the state of practice.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist certification.
  • Health Care Provider Life Support certification.
  • ACLS certification for critical care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Membership in national professional organizations (AARC, NBRC).
  • One year of acute or critical care experience.
Work Environment

This position requires ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors require verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity is required for manipulating complex and delicate equipment, and the ability to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients is necessary. The position may require standing in a stationary position for an extended period.
