Position Overview
Are you dedicated to fostering a secure environment and supporting a vibrant community focused on student achievement? Renton Technical College (RTC) is looking for a committed security professional to enhance our team. Our mission is to ensure a safe and secure atmosphere for all members of our community. The part-time Campus Safety Coordinator is a classified position eligible for overtime and is part of the Campus Security Department. Reporting to the Security Field Supervisor and the Director of Safety and Security, this role emphasizes customer service and the creation of a safe, secure, and inviting environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include:
- Exhibit multicultural competence and foster an inclusive educational and work environment.
- Conduct foot and vehicle patrols of campus grounds, assist with vehicle unlocks, jump-start requests, and enforce parking regulations.
- Handle incoming calls and self-dispatch using a department-issued phone.
- Perform routine security inspections of facilities and grounds.
- Manage the locking and unlocking of buildings and the arming and disarming of alarms as necessary.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of life-safety equipment.
- Understand and enforce college regulations.
- Provide assistance to faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Engage with local law enforcement for trespass notices and escort individuals from campus when required.
- Offer walking and vehicle escorts for students, faculty, and staff upon request.
- Wear the designated uniform and maintain issued equipment.
- Participate in professional development opportunities provided by the college.
- Be available for special events or to cover shifts for other staff as needed.
- Respond to all alarms while on call.
- Maintain an accurate daily shift log and submit incident reports promptly.
- Contact emergency services as needed and provide necessary support.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Stay informed about the Jeanne Clery Act and assist in compliance efforts.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
- Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to an inclusive work environment.
- Ability to represent the college positively and communicate effectively in various situations.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of customer service experience, preferably in security or public safety.
- One year of security experience and conflict resolution skills.
- Understanding of local, state, and federal laws.
- Attention to detail and experience in maintaining accurate records.
- Proficiency in standard computer applications and communication tools.
- Valid Washington State driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (training provided).
- Physical capability to walk, stand, climb, and sit for extended periods.
- Critical thinking and independent judgment skills.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Training in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to promote accessibility and universal design.
- Proficiency in a language other than English is preferred.
- Two years of prior security, law enforcement, or military experience.
- One year of experience in higher education.
- Incident command training certification.
- Experience with defensive tactics and use of force continuum.
Campus Safety Coordinators may be required to work during emergencies. The role involves physical and mental demands, including active movement and sound judgment in daily activities and emergencies. Work occurs both outdoors and indoors, with exposure to various environmental conditions.
