As a Peer Specialist with the Center for Justice Innovation, you will serve as a beacon of hope for those struggling with substance abuse, connecting them to essential services and fostering a sense of community.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of harm reduction principles and be able to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. You will work closely with the NYPD, courts, and treatment providers to ensure seamless coordination and delivery of services. Key Responsibilities:

Dispatch and Community Duties:
  • Collaborate with law enforcement to respond to precinct-level arrests and engage potential participants in the HOPE program;
  • Engage individuals who are arrested for controlled substances and motivate them to seek treatment and support;
  • Facilitate individual education sessions that cater to the specific needs of each participant;
  • Contact case management teams to facilitate entry into harm reduction or substance abuse treatment;
  • Provide crisis intervention and support to program participants as needed;
  • Administer Narcan training and provide education on its use;
  • Conduct street outreach in the Bronx and surrounding areas to promote the HOPE program's offerings;
  • Host harm reduction and Narcan workshops at the Center's office;
  • Accurately document client interactions and send electronic assessments to the HOPE team;
  • Attend team meetings, supervision, and trainings as required;

Court-Based Duties:

  • Stationed in the Bronx County Criminal Court or Center's office to meet with potential participants;
  • Engage individuals in court after an arrest to offer support and connection to programming;
  • Provide crisis intervention and support to program participants as needed in collaboration with the case management team;
  • Assist participants with transportation to appointments and crisis services;
  • Utilize your lived experience and skills to connect with members and support them in their goals;
  • Communicate accurately, empathetically, and under time constraints;
  • Comfort working and collaborating with law enforcement and court staff;

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • A high school diploma and at least 2 years of relevant experience;
  • Experience with integrated substance abuse assessment and treatment, motivational interviewing techniques, and stage-wise treatment;
  • A valid driver's license;
  • CRPA certification preferred;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, particularly Word and Outlook;
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles;
  • Bilingualism (English-Spanish) preferred;
