Position Overview:

The Surgical Services Technician plays a vital role in the preparation and execution of patient care under the guidance of the Circulating Registered Nurse, adhering to the Nursing Process.

This role involves assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures, ensuring the operating room is fully equipped for the operation, monitoring supply levels, and participating in the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments.


Qualifications

Education:
Completion of a Surgical Technician training program.

Experience:
Candidates must fulfill one of the following minimum criteria to qualify for employment as per SC State Law:

Option 1:

  • Certification from an accredited Surgical Technician educational institution and;
  • Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology within 90 days of graduation and;
  • Proof of at least 15 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually (regardless of employment status with Tidelands Health throughout the calendar year).

Option 2:

  • Certification as a Surgical Technician by the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or US Public Health Service and;
  • Proof of at least 15 hours of CEUs annually (regardless of employment status with Tidelands Health throughout the calendar year).

Option 3:

  • Documentation of employment as a Surgical Technician in a South Carolina healthcare facility or federal government prior to January 1, 2008 (a break in service does not disqualify the individual as long as prior employment is documented) and;
  • Proof of at least 15 hours of CEUs annually (regardless of employment status with Tidelands Health throughout the calendar year).

Skills:
Ability to collaborate effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Completion of the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 30 days of hire (exceptions for obtaining certification from other providers may be approved on a case-by-case basis). BLS recertification is required every two years.
  • Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is required unless one of the above qualifications is met.

Physical Requirements:
Medium Physical Agility Test (PAT) Rating

While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally required to use hands and fingers; and frequently required to communicate verbally.

The employee must be able to exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
