Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Central Service Technician II to join our team at the University of Iowa Health Care Central Sterilizing department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing technical duties involving the cleaning, sterilization, and assembly of equipment, supplies, and instruments according to prescribed procedures and techniques.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare instruments for mechanical and manual decontamination processes.
  • Pick up soiled items from clinics and nursing units.
  • Sort, assemble, and label instrument trays, single packaged instruments, linen, and supplies for sterilization.
  • Perform duties as a lead technician, including assigning technical duties to personnel and assuming responsibility for accurately completing shift duties.
  • Participate in assessment and monitoring of staff competency, provide feedback, and support to assist with performance evaluations.
  • Decontaminate, disassemble, inspect, clean, sort, and reassemble complex surgical instrument and implant trays.
  • Operate automatic scope washers, sonic washers, and mechanical washer/decontaminators.
  • Perform microbicidal processes, standard/transmission-based precautions, and engineering and work practice controls.
  • Handle large volumes of complex, high-dollar flexible scopes, delicate eye instruments, power equipment, and different instrument patterns.
  • Reference materials via computer systems, follow guides and instructions to assemble high-complexity and volume of instrument trays.
  • Inspect and evaluate instruments for proper function and cleanliness.
  • Confirm all quality assurance mechanisms are in place.
  • Perform all aspects of sterilization, packaging inspection, equipment operation, safety procedures, proper documentation, and prioritization.
  • Sterilize items per manufacturer's instructions, verify correct parameters used for all instruments.
  • Assemble instrument trays in accordance with patient/surgeon procedure-specific cards with appropriate time frame and document missing items.
  • Perform duties in a high-stress environment, respond to emergencies, and urgent add-on cases.
  • Receive and respond to a high volume of phone calls to provide additional items as needed.
  • Perform inventory management for high-volume supplies and implants.
  • Monitor and replenish stock levels through the use of multiple computer software programs and check stock expiration dates.
  • Restock items and add new items to inventory.
  • Perform biological monitoring of sterilizers to ensure sterilizer efficiency.
  • Conduct challenge tests on sterilization and decontamination equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance functions on all equipment, as needed.
Requirements
  • Verified experience with or documented completion of a medical terminology course.
  • High school graduation or equivalent, with courses in the physical and natural sciences and mathematics.
  • Must possess and maintain certification from the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Health Care Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).
  • Two years of related experience working in a medical field that includes a sterile processing component, or one year of working in sterile processing and one year of experience in a functional supervision role, or one year of related experience in a medical field that includes a sterile processing component and one year of college-level coursework.
