About the Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced educator to join our team as an Extension Associate in Prescribed Fire and Fire Science. This is an exciting opportunity to work with our 11-person Extension Forestry team, collaborating with faculty and staff to deliver research-based education and outreach programs to various audiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver educational programming and materials on prescribed fire and fire science, with a focus on building collaborative partnerships with stakeholders, including county Extension personnel, landowners, state and federal agencies, and non-government organizations.
  • Work with researchers to interpret and disseminate current research findings, using a variety of delivery strategies, including workshops, short-courses, demonstration projects, webinars, podcasts, publications, and social media.
  • Provide leadership and work collaboratively in data management and reporting, maintaining existing and developing new programs in support of wildland fire in the Southeast.
  • Conduct all aspects of virtual and in-person education/outreach events, including planning, marketing, event logistics, education, and program evaluation.
  • Seek external funding to support program efforts, developing proposals and managing awarded proposals in accordance with university policy and procedures.
Requirements
  • A Master's degree (preferred) or a bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience in forestry, fire science, ecology, natural resources, agricultural extension education, science communication, risk communication, public engagement, or other related fields.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including effective use of electronic and printed media.
  • Excellent time and resource management skills, with the ability to multitask, set priorities, seek opportunities, manage resources, and exhibit success.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid North Carolina driver's license and willingness to drive extended distances.
  • Ability to apply professional scheduling, including delivery of evening and weekend educational programs and activities as determined by programming and collaborator needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to secure and manage external funding in support of the land grant mission.
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, conducting, and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs.
  • Willingness/ability to learn new skills, tools, techniques, software, and approaches.
  • Ability to teach effectively in non-formal settings, including field days, demonstrations, workshops, and public events.
