About the Role

Housing Works is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Custodian to join our Commercial Facilities team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of our commercial locations, including communication with facility managers and staff to address any issues or concerns.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure all physical spaces are sanitary, clean, and orderly, adhering to regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Comply with scheduled or routine custodial and maintenance plans to maintain common, kitchen, and office areas in a clean and sanitary manner.
  • Be proactive in communicating daily activities and significant conditions that may impact task completion to the Facility Manager.
  • Adhere to the scheduled or routine custodial and maintenance plans to ensure all common, kitchen, and office areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary, and orderly manner.
  • Ensure restrooms are sanitary and attractive throughout the day, with adequate supplies as needed.
  • Empty trash bins, shredders, and recycling bins throughout the day, and sanitize containers weekly.
  • Dust and vacuum all offices and common spaces, as well as general maintenance needs, including light bulbs, moving and arranging office furniture, and polishing metalwork as needed.
  • Ensure all debris, water, snow, and garbage from hallways, sidewalks, and entrances and exits are cleared for staff and client safety and compliance with facility leases.
  • Assume responsibility for care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and cleaning supplies.
  • Check in with Senior Custodians and Facility Manager to be aware of and address the Salesforce-based work order system, as per agency policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and respond to customer requests/work order inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Perform office moves, minor construction projects (patching, painting, etc.) as needed.
  • Serve as the major liaison with site supervisors and Facility Manager to ensure communication of housekeeping needs are being met.
  • Advise the Facility Manager about personnel requirements, material needs, subcontract requirements, facility, and equipment needs to meet or exceed operational plans.
  • Help coordinate activities with all other functions of the organization and suppliers to obtain optimum production and utilization of human resources, IT, and equipment.
  • Ensure all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, government, and customer policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Help monitor facility security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors and checking electrical appliances to ensure safety hazards are not created.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of commercial housekeeping experience.

This position is included in a bargaining unit of Housing Works' New York City employees represented by the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). The RWDSU has the exclusive right to bargain over the terms and conditions of employment related to this position, and this position may become covered by the terms of a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Housing Works and the RWDSU.

This position requires applicants to successfully complete a background check through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services when it supports the mandate under Section 424-a of the Social Services Law for legally authorized agencies to inquire of the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR) as to the existence of any indicated reports of child abuse and maltreatment against an applicant prior to employment, certification, or licensure in the childcare field.

Compensation for this position is $17 per hour.
