Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision from the assigned manager, the Campus Safety Coordinator will undertake responsibilities related to the management, operation, activities, and services of the Community Safety Department. This role is essential in ensuring the safety and security of the college community while upholding the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Responsibilities include active patrolling, responding to incidents, and engaging in the daily operations of the District's safety and parking services across all locations and events.


Key Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing practices:

  • Act as a representative for the department; handle radio and telephone communications; address complaints; provide information and promote awareness regarding Community Safety services and District policies.
  • Prepare and review documents, including correspondence, agendas, and reports; maintain accurate logs of incidents and manage records within relational databases.
  • Address parking violations and enforce regulations on District property; manage the safe movement of vehicles in parking areas.
  • Conduct investigations of violations of laws and District policies in a trauma-informed and equitable manner.
  • Provide safety escorts for students and staff upon request.
  • Respond to emergencies as a First Responder; may administer basic first aid or CPR as necessary.
  • Patrol campus facilities to ensure safety and security; monitor buildings and grounds for potential hazards.
  • Respond to alarms and suspicious activities, evaluating situations and taking appropriate action.
  • Provide onboarding support and training for students or temporary employees.
  • Monitor and maintain parking control equipment; report malfunctions and collect parking fees as needed.
  • Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with District staff, students, and the public.
  • Participate in campus-wide meetings and events to foster community relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required qualifications for the position. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Education/Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade or General Educational Development (GED). Preferred candidates will have a degree in modern policing from a California Community College.
  • Experience: Two years of general safety and/or security experience, preferably with extensive public contact.
  • License/Certificate: Valid California Driver's License, Guard Card, appropriate School Security Guard Training and Certification, CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, Hazardous Materials Awareness Certificate, and Community College specific POST training.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Understanding of law enforcement principles, crime prevention, and community-based policing practices.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws regarding campus safety and security.
  • Ability to effectively patrol facilities, assess emergency situations, and implement appropriate response strategies.
  • Skill in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in using office equipment and technology to perform job duties.
