We are seeking a Lead Researcher in Explosives Engineering to spearhead experimental initiatives involving high explosives and energetic materials. This role is pivotal in supporting the management of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, advancing conventional weapon design, enhancing counterterrorism strategies, and fostering commercial collaborations. The position is situated within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
This role may provide a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work. Flexibility to work from home on designated days may be available.
Positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level, contingent upon your qualifications. Additional responsibilities may be assigned if selected for the higher level.
Key Responsibilities- Design, execute, assess, and interpret hydrodynamic experiments driven by explosives, collaborating with diagnostics operators and technical experts across various advanced facilities.
- Provide innovative scientific and engineering solutions for hydrodynamic experiment design, leveraging your expertise.
- Establish experimental criteria and oversee the execution of different components of the experiments.
- Conduct, arm, and analyze experiments utilizing high-explosive materials.
- Ensure the assembly of experimental apparatus meets established specifications through diligent monitoring.
- Perform quality assurance evaluations on experiments, including directing the setup and execution of confirmatory dry-runs to guarantee high-quality data outcomes.
- Analyze intricate experimental data, document findings, and communicate insights and lessons learned effectively.
- Present research findings to stakeholders and maintain documentation in both open and classified settings.
- Travel as necessary to support project needs.
- Promote a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability within the workplace.
- Undertake additional duties as required.
- Independently provide advanced technical expertise using multi-physics and computational tools to model diagnostic performance for complex problems.
- Oversee multiple concurrent experiments at various stages, including the arming and execution of these experiments.
- Advocate for and facilitate the integration of advanced diagnostics and data analysis techniques in explosive hydrodynamic experiments.
- Lead projects that require meticulous planning and collaborative execution.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
- Master's Degree or PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- Thorough understanding of scientific principles relevant to hydrodynamic testing.
- Hands-on experience in experimental science within laboratory or test facility settings, with familiarity in structured operational protocols.
- Experience managing medium to large-scale technical projects.
- Proven self-motivation and initiative in tackling complex challenges, with a knack for innovative problem-solving.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team to achieve long-term objectives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to collaborate with diverse personalities in various settings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for articulating experimental designs and findings, along with proficiency in standard office software.
- In-depth knowledge of physics, engineering, mathematics, or related fields.
- Significant experience in leading and mentoring multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated success in conducting high-quality research in relevant scientific and engineering domains.
- Experience working with explosives or high-hazard materials.
- Familiarity with computer-aided design tools.
- Experience in team leadership and personnel management.
- Expertise in diagnosing rapid transient phenomena.
- Knowledge of modeling ionizing radiation transmission and effects.
- Experience with dynamic radiography, high-speed photography, and related technologies.
- Proficiency in scientific data analysis using programming languages such as C++, Python, or MATLAB.
- Understanding of the Strategic Deterrence weapons program and explosive hydrodynamic experimentation.
