Lunar Outpost, a pioneer in the field of space robotics, is on the lookout for a skilled Localization + Perception SW Responsible Engineer to play a pivotal role in advancing lunar surface mobility within a dynamic startup atmosphere.

In this role, you will lead the creation and execution of advanced localization, state estimation, sensor fusion, perception, and mapping systems. These systems are essential for enabling our lunar rovers to autonomously navigate and comprehend the lunar landscape, identifying obstacles and optimizing their routes. Your contributions will be vital to our mission, empowering the rovers to undertake intricate exploration tasks with unmatched precision and dependability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop sophisticated localization and perception systems for both global and local navigation, ensuring accurate rover movement across the lunar terrain.
  • Implement cutting-edge sensor fusion techniques, utilizing data from various sensors to improve system accuracy and reliability.
  • Create and enhance algorithms for terrain and obstacle mapping, which will aid in effective path planning and rover autonomy.
  • Oversee the integration of perception systems with rover hardware, ensuring smooth functionality in lunar conditions.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, thermal) to ensure system designs align with overall rover specifications and mission goals.
  • Manage the testing and validation of localization and perception systems through simulations and field trials, ensuring performance aligns with project objectives.
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers and technical personnel, fostering innovation and technical excellence.
  • Utilize project management expertise to coordinate additional engineering support, ensuring timely progress and adherence to project timelines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Robotic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in localization, perception, sensor fusion, and mapping technologies, preferably in the realm of autonomous vehicles and/or robotics.
  • Proficient in programming languages pertinent to robotics and perception systems, such as C++ and Python, with experience in ROS.
  • Experience in R&D focused on perception and localization in unstructured or off-road environments.
  • Must be a U.S. Person.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, or a closely related field, emphasizing localization, perception, mapping, or sensor fusion.
  • Previous experience with space robotics or autonomous systems designed for space or other unstructured environments.
  • Experience in developing algorithms for resource-constrained systems.
  • Published research or contributions to open-source projects in areas relevant to localization, sensor fusion, or autonomous navigation.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and experience managing technical teams or projects, with the ability to drive initiatives from concept to completion.
