About the Chief Executive Officer Position
The Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) is in search of a visionary leader, skilled fundraiser, and passionate advocate for animal welfare to guide the organization through a transformative phase of development.

The new Chief Executive Officer will engage with a diverse array of stakeholders, including staff, the Board of Directors, volunteers, government representatives, community collaborators, and donors, both locally and beyond.

In partnership with these groups, the incoming leader will spearhead strategic initiatives designed to foster growth and innovation, while broadening AWLA's strategic vision and influence.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer will lead a dedicated team of professionals, which includes:

Chief Operating Officer
Director of Development
Director of Finance & Administration
Director of Human Resources
The ideal candidate will be an authentic, dynamic, and forward-thinking leader who values diverse perspectives. We are looking for an inclusive leader who prioritizes listening, motivating, empowering others, and inspiring both donors and key stakeholders.

The successful candidate will excel in building and maintaining trust while keeping a keen focus on organizational strategy, performance, and operations.

The incoming Chief Executive Officer will have the opportunity to leverage AWLA's rich legacy while driving innovative strategies to elevate the organization into a new era of impact and growth.

They will champion animal welfare, creativity, and innovation while expanding a robust donor network and overseeing the next phase of organizational development.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
Collaborate with the Board to establish vision and direction for programmatic, policy, and organizational advancement.
Support Board functions and assist in recruitment and engagement efforts.

Fundraising Initiatives
Work with the Board and development team to attract new donors. Cultivate donor relationships and innovate fundraising strategies to enhance financial sustainability, including major gifts and planned giving programs.
Lead the creation of capital campaigns, collaborating with relevant stakeholders to achieve financial goals. In partnership with the Board and Development Director, assist in securing funding for campaigns.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Team Management
Promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace through policy implementation and DEI training initiatives. Support ongoing learning and development opportunities for staff and volunteers.
Ensure transparent communication regarding decisions that affect staff and the organization. Develop and implement procedures for effective management, administrative practices, and fiscal responsibility.
Uphold professional standards and practices, leading by example to foster staff development aligned with AWLA's vision.

Accountability and Operational Excellence
Oversee AWLA's budget and strategic plan to ensure fiscal integrity and effective resource allocation.
Assess program effectiveness and community needs to establish short-term objectives and plans. Research potential programs in consultation with staff to enhance AWLA's impact.
Drive continuous improvement by implementing best practices and nurturing a culture of innovation and efficiency.
Standardize processes across the organization to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure consistency.

Public Relations and Community Engagement
Serve as AWLA's spokesperson, advocating for its goals and mission to a diverse audience. Represent AWLA at local, regional, and national levels.
Collaborate with local government staff to fulfill contractual obligations.
Your qualifications
The ideal candidate for the AWLA Search Committee meets the following criteria:
Extensive executive leadership experience with a proven track record of organizational growth, ideally in a senior capacity.
Demonstrated success in fundraising, including donor cultivation and solicitation. Experience leading capital campaigns is preferred.
A genuine passion, empathy, and commitment to the mission of AWLA.
Experience overseeing critical executive functions such as strategy, finance (including managing budgets exceeding $5 million), operations, communications, and fundraising, preferably in a non-profit context.
A history of leading teams and fostering an organization rooted in a compassionate culture.
Experience in driving continuous improvement, standardizing processes, and enhancing operational effectiveness to ensure efficiency and consistency.
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences and maintain organizational relationships.
Ability to embrace and respect multiple perspectives and groups.

Desirable Qualifications:
Familiarity with the Northern Virginia and/or D.C. Metropolitan area.
Experience in animal welfare and open admission humane society or animal control sectors.
Experience in creating, reviewing, and analyzing financial statements, disclosures, and audits.
