Costume Design Sewing Associate

As a key member of our team, you will work on assigned costumes by hand or machine while maintaining a clean and safe workspace and assisting in fitting, stitching, or other assigned costume duties. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and altering costumes, maintaining storage, and assisting students during productions with fabric preparation, pattern layout and marking, garment assembly, and pressing. You will also demonstrate industrial sewing, hand sewing, and fine finishing techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and alter costumes to ensure high-quality construction and finishing techniques
  • Assist students during productions with fabric preparation, pattern layout and marking, garment assembly, and pressing
  • Demonstrate industrial sewing, hand sewing, and fine finishing techniques
  • Operate industrial sewing machines and sergers/overlocks

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in costume design, costume technology, fashion technology, or related field
  • At least one year of related experience and/or equivalent education and experience in draping, flat pattern drafting, and costume construction for theater
  • Demonstrated experience in developing sewing patterns and instructions from costume renderings and research imagery, patternmaking, draping, construction of menswear, and tailoring
  • Familiarity with costume history and construction methods
  • Excellent overall garment construction skills and proficiency in hand and machine sewing

Travel Requirements:

  • Less than 10%

Work Hours:

The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
