Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems Sector has an opening for a Principal Software Engineer to support the Global Surveillance Division with a team of skilled and diverse professionals.

This role will be based in Melbourne, Florida. Responsibilities encompass deploying, automating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing the systems and software infrastructure to ensure optimal performance.

The position demands hands-on technical expertise and a proactive approach towards environment automation and management, along with a focus on continuous improvement.

You will be an integral part of an agile development team. Your duties will include designing and implementing application builds, releases, deployments, and configuration activities.

Your responsibilities will also involve collaborating with internal business partners to gather requirements, prototyping, and architecting complex solutions that support building and executing test plans, conducting quality reviews, and resolving operational issues.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to take ownership of challenging problems and drive them to resolution while thriving in a collaborative environment.

A solid understanding of the software development life cycle and in-depth knowledge of automated testing to facilitate and analyze large data sets is essential.

The Software Engineer will develop, modify, and maintain both customized and standardized applications adhering to software engineering best practices and standards, participating in the entire software development life cycle, including requirements development, modeling and design, application development, unit to CSCI testing, integration, formal system testing, release, installation, and maintenance.

The ideal candidate will possess the capability to take ownership of complex challenges and lead their implementation within a team setting.

A thorough understanding of the software development life cycle and expertise in automated testing to facilitate and analyze large data sets is crucial.

The Software Engineer will engage in the complete software development life cycle, covering requirements development, modeling and design, application development, unit to CSCI testing, integration, formal system testing, release, installation, and maintenance.

The Software Engineer will leverage technical expertise to address complex integration challenges. Interaction with Program Management, external suppliers, and/or government clients will be necessary, thus requiring excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proficiency in bash scripting, C/C++, or other object-oriented programming languages in a Linux environment is mandatory. The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance and Special Program Access is also required.

Essential Functions:
Able to travel 50% of the time. Full lifecycle design, implementation, and unit testing of software. Apply extensive technical expertise and possess comprehensive knowledge of related disciplines.

Deliver technical solutions to a broad spectrum of complex and challenging problems that are innovative, thorough, feasible, and aligned with program objectives.

In-depth understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the relevant field.

Design, develop, document, test, and debug application software and systems that incorporate logical and mathematical solutions.

Conduct multidisciplinary research as necessary and collaborate with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for products.

Work with various team members to integrate functionality with other software components. Provide technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives. Support the gathering and reporting of software metrics. Adhere to program software best practices. Develop software products throughout all phases of the software lifecycle. Capable of working independently and identifying solutions to complex issues. Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on contracts and projects. Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • (Principal Engineer Software) bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 or more years of experience in software engineering OR a Master's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and 3 or more years of experience in software engineering.
  • Development experience with C/C++ or other OOP languages.
  • Experience developing software in a Linux and Windows environment.
  • Experience with debugging software in both the desktop and target environments.
  • Experience with software or systems testing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with Agile software development.
  • Experience with configuration management using industry-standard tools and processes.
  • Able to travel 50% of the time.
  • Excellent customer interaction skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret level security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain special program access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with related experience.
  • U.S. Citizen and an Active DoD Top Secret with issue/reissue in the last 5 years with SCI and the ability to obtain and maintain a special program access clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience with COMSEC equipment.
  • CompTIA Security Plus certification.
  • CompTIA Linux Plus certification.
  • Experience leading a team.
  • Experience with Windows, Linux, and/or VxWorks development.
  • Familiarity with the Atlassian tool suite with add-ons like Git and Confluence.
  • Familiarity with the Agile software development process.

Salary Range:
$92,600 - $139,000. The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
