Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Kitchen Assistant to join our team at Huggins Hospital. As a key member of our Food and Nutrition Department, you will play a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of our kitchen and cafe areas.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of tasks to support the operations of the Department of Food and Nutrition, including cleaning and sanitation of all kitchen, cafe, and storage areas.
  • Ensure all floor surfaces are clean by sweeping and mopping as needed, following safety procedures to maintain a safe environment.
  • Remove trash from all kitchen and cafe areas regularly and bring it to the dumpster, separating it as directed.
  • Supervise volunteers in the dish room to ensure all safety and sanitation policies are being followed.
  • Clean the grease interceptor daily after dinner service.
Dish and Small Wares
  • Clean and sanitize all soiled dishes, operating the automatic dishwasher to ensure cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Pre-wash and soak dishes as needed to ensure clean and sanitized dishes and kitchen equipment.
  • Return all clean and sanitized dishes and kitchenware to their correct place in the kitchen.
  • Continuously clean and sanitize the dish room to maintain a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Check Med Surg, ICU, and Emergency Department for soiled patient dishes and return them to the dish room.
Prep
  • Perform prep duties as instructed by the First Cook, including cooking or preparing needed foods.
  • Prepare needed cafe items when instructed.
  • Assist in plating food when instructed.
  • Assist in putting away food stores when instructed.
Catering
  • Deliver all catering orders, taking responsibility for the proper setup of function carts and ensuring all needed items are provided.
  • Return after the conclusion of the catering event to pick up any remaining items.
  • Prepare all necessary items for functions, including beverages, sandwiches, desserts, flatware, plates, napkins, etc.
  • Manage time to ensure on-time delivery of all catering orders.
  • Upon completion of pick-up, place finished function requests in the correct folder.
Organizational Expectations
  • Attendance is an essential job function, with employees expected to come to work daily, on time, and complete scheduled shifts.
  • Facilitate patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Contribute to positive team performance and a culture of service excellence through effective communication, active listening, and respect.
  • Maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships with staff, patients, and visitors at all times, working as a team member with other departments.
  • Practice workplace safety daily.
  • Actively participate in all hospital Service Excellence initiatives and trainings.
  • Attend and participate in a minimum of 50% of department staff meetings and sign off on review of 100% of department staff meeting minutes.
  • Complete all required annual education on or before the due date.

  • Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers.
  • Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress.
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
  • Familiarity with computer and other business machines.
Qualifications
  • Entry-level position.
  • Serv-Safe certification: Maintain or obtain within 6 months of employment.
