Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated Biomedical Research Specialist to join our team at the Department of Human Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Our lab's research focus is on developing novel genetic and pharmaceutical tools for solid tumors. This position will be responsible for developing, conducting, and supervising research experiments in biochemical, molecular, and whole animal research.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Carefully collect and analyze data from our lab's experiments and studies of collaborators.
  2. Coordinate and schedule animal usage and testing throughout the laboratory group, ensuring compliance with established SOPs, laboratory guidelines, and sponsor requirements.
  3. Ensure timely ordering of laboratory chemical and supply inventories by personnel.
  4. Implement improvements in any aspect of the research undertaken in the group.
  5. Update laboratory equipment control software and ensure devices are functioning properly.
  6. Provide technical training of technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in laboratory methods and proper use of laboratory equipment.
  7. Provide input to supervisors during personnel evaluations.
  8. Evaluate integrity of testing and compliance with university and external regulatory offices (IACUC, IRB, OEHS, DEA, etc.).
  9. Serve as contact person for university compliance offices and prepare materials for inspections.
  10. Assist PI with writing and editing initial drafts of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
  11. Work on independent research projects with direction and assistance of the PI.
  12. Maintain current scientific literature pertinent to laboratory activities.
  13. Present new findings at regularly scheduled laboratory meetings.
Requirements:
  • A master's degree in a biomedical or related science field. Ph.D.-level scientists are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices involved in conducting biochemical, molecular, and whole animal research.
  • Documented medical writing and composition skills, resulting in published scientific reports and manuscripts.
  • Experience handling laboratory animals and small animal surgical skills.
  • Competency with statistical and graphing software.
  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. degree in a biomedical science or neuroscience with strong background in biochemical and molecular methodologies.
  • Documented managerial skills for coordinating and managing multiple studies simultaneously.
Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000 per annum
Benefits: Eligible for benefits provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
