Role Summary

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Exterior Plastics Engineering team. This role requires a high level of independence and is pivotal in driving product development and engineering initiatives for our Interior and Exterior Plastics sectors within Toyoda Gosei North America.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D initiatives to create innovative automotive technologies, materials, and processes aimed at enhancing vehicle performance, efficiency, and safety.
  • Evaluate and address risks linked to design choices, foreseeing potential challenges and implementing proactive solutions.
  • Collaborate on designs that meet customer aesthetic and engineering specifications while ensuring manufacturability and profitability.
  • Generate design proposals for automotive parts and components using advanced 2D and 3D design software.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and benchmarking of components and emerging technologies.
  • Act as a resource for design, analysis, measurement, bench testing, vehicle testing, and prototyping.
  • Prepare technical documentation, open items lists, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Enhance design quality and productivity by establishing new design guidelines.
  • Maintain thorough records of product development in accordance with quality system requirements.
  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams to resolve design-related issues and prepare for design release.
  • Create necessary drawings and participate in Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Advance new technologies through partnerships with customers and suppliers, with minimal oversight.
  • Continuously refine the product development process to elevate service levels for our clients.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in engineering project management, automotive part design, and injection molding.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to fellow engineering team members.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment where teamwork and adaptability are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; a degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) is preferred.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant industry experience is required.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling for plastic injection parts is essential; experience with CATIA V5 is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of plastic component design and injection tooling is required.
  • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is necessary.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple engineering projects and timelines effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (2016 or newer) is required.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines is essential.
  • Excellent verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills are required.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills are necessary.
