Job Title: Regional Medical Officer

Join the Washington State Department of Health as a Regional Medical Officer and play a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of our diverse communities.

Job Summary:

This is a home-based position that requires occasional in-office days and travel throughout Washington state. As a Regional Medical Officer, you will provide scientific and medical guidance statewide, working closely with local health and Tribal leaders to meet regional health needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Support the Secretary of Health and the Chief Science Officer in advancing the priorities of the State of Washington and the Washington Department of Health in support of our state's public health system.
  • Stay informed about emerging science to support a strong scientific basis in support of emerging issues, emergencies, or other priority issues.
  • Provide evidence-based public health insights within their region, including key response challenges during emergencies.
  • Collaborate with local health officers and local health jurisdictions on community health improvement initiatives, particularly opportunities that align with agency priorities in equity, innovation, and engagement.
  • Represent the agency at regional forums, committees, and workgroups for a variety of public health issues.
  • Participate in activities as appropriate to better understand the diverse needs of a region and to build connections and relationships.
  • Help ensure that agency initiatives in a region are informed by a deep understanding of the local communities.
  • Assist in the development of evidence-based public messaging and serve as a support for communication in their regional area, including during emergencies.
  • Provide regional coordination to agency public health programs to ensure effective linkages with private and public healthcare provider groups.
Qualifications:
  • Possession of a Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy in the United States, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized foreign medical institution.
  • A Master's degree in Public Health or an alternative pathway as outlined in the legislation establishing the regional health officer role.
  • Completion of a three-year medical residency program or patient care training, with a preference for programs specializing in preventive medicine or primary care.
  • Must be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Washington by the start date or within 30 days thereafter.
  • Board certification in various medical fields, including primary care or other specialties, unless supplemented by 3-5 years of relevant experience in science, public health, medicine, or related fields within an institution or organization preferred.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish/English preferred.
