Medical Laboratory Specialist

PeaceHealth is seeking a Medical Lab Technician to perform complex laboratory procedures and tests in areas such as blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of laboratory protocols and procedures, as well as excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate specimens for testing and apply established criteria for testing and analysis.
- Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory tests, including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology tests.
- Monitor, screen, and troubleshoot devices, tests, and procedures to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Maintain equipment and records, and perform quality assurance activities related to test performance.
- Provide guidance and direction to phlebotomy and specimen management teams, and assist with department orientation for new caregivers and students.
- Consult with clinicians, supervisors, and other caregivers as appropriate on test results, requirements, and testing protocols.
- Maintain appropriate records for specimens, tests, and data, and utilize computer systems in reporting and documenting analysis.
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited laboratory training program or equivalent education as defined by CLIA 42CFR Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency.
- 2 years of experience performing high complexity testing in a clinical laboratory department, preferred.
- Medical Laboratory Technician Certified by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) upon hire.
- Ability to recognize and ensure validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results for testing.
- Working knowledge of specimen collection, preparation, and test requirements and factors affecting test interpretation in responding to inquiries.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of computer systems such as Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft Office programs.
- Moderate lifting up to 35 pounds.
- Mathematical ability to calculate fractions, percentages, ratios, proportion measurements, and apply practical algebra.
- General understanding of laboratory equipment to calibrate and do minor repairs.

PeaceHealth has a medical and religious exemption request process for those that are unable to receive the COVID-19 primary vaccine series due to medical/religious reasons.
