Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: The Quality Assurance Lab Technician is accountable for conducting pre-operational inspections of equipment and facilities, performing swabbing and sponging, and accurately interpreting and reporting results. This role involves auditing standard operating procedures, executing daily quality inspections to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and conducting sensory evaluations to guarantee that all products adhere to the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities: The following duties are essential to the role and may be expanded as necessary:

  • Collect samples and execute required analyses.
  • Accurately interpret and document results in a timely manner.
  • Conduct audits of various processes within the facility to ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary reagents and solutions for analysis.
  • Inspect equipment before and during production runs.
  • Lead the shelf life program to ensure product viability.
  • Confirm that products meet finished product specifications through sensory evaluations, analytical testing, and observational assessments.
  • Provide comprehensive written reports regarding product quality and processing.
  • Perform microbiological testing, as well as chemical and physical analyses on both raw and finished products.
  • Organize and maintain all Quality Assurance records systematically.
  • Verify, organize, and issue Certificates of Analysis (COAs) as required.
  • Inspect transfer, mixing, and processing equipment to ensure adherence to cleaning and quality protocols.
  • Engage in larger scope Quality Assurance or Improvement Projects as assigned.
  • Monitor employee practices concerning Good Manufacturing Practices and provide recommendations to enhance food quality and consistency across shifts.

Qualifications: To succeed in this position, candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in food science, biology, or chemistry is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally within a quality assurance capacity; strong mathematical and communication skills are essential for interpreting written procedures.
  • A solid understanding of GMP, HACCP, and SQF guidelines is necessary.
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset to work closely within a small team.
  • Strong decision-making abilities, training skills, problem-solving capabilities, and creativity, along with proficiency in reading, writing, and understanding English.
  • Competence in basic arithmetic operations and the ability to interpret data through graphs.
  • Familiarity with office equipment and document control or production management software systems, including AS 400 and AX software.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand or walk for 8-9 hours daily.
  • Capability to lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Willingness to work in environments with temperatures of 40 degrees or less.
  • Availability to work overtime during peak production periods.
