Position Overview:

The Operating Room Surgical Specialist is responsible for executing scrub duties in accordance with the principles of aseptic technique, infection prevention, universal safety protocols, environmental management, and life safety standards. This role anticipates the requirements of both the patient and the surgeon, showcasing critical thinking abilities and prioritizing tasks while fulfilling the scrub responsibilities. The Surgical Specialist operates under the guidance of the Registered Nurse, demonstrating proficiency in preparing medications for surgical procedures and possessing knowledge of standard intra-operative medications, their dosages, concentrations, and proper administration routes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and understands the specific applications of surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Locates, manages, and operates equipment effectively.
  • Initiates service requests and communicates with supervisors regarding any equipment malfunctions.
  • Performs scrub duties independently by sourcing supplies, equipment, and instruments; prepares the operating room using preference cards to organize surgical instruments and equipment; adeptly sets up the sterile field for patients across all age groups for the surgical experience; demonstrates knowledge of sterilization techniques necessary for instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains and updates preference cards through automated processes and clinical information systems efficiently.
  • Recognizes potential patient risks: identifies hazards to minimize injury; takes actions to eliminate or report risks; follows procedures in case of incidents; documents common issues, failures, and user errors.
  • Complies with all Hospital Policies and Procedures, particularly those related to Conduct Guidelines, Corporate Compliance, Diversity, and Confidentiality.
  • Embraces the principles of customer service and continuous quality improvement in daily activities.
  • Safeguards confidentiality concerning all aspects of patient care, personnel matters, and strategic initiatives.
  • Fosters positive working relationships and encourages a collaborative work environment.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or equivalent clinical surgical training/experience.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of prior surgical experience; experience in at least two (2) specialty areas is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
