Job Responsibilities:

As a Nutrition Specialist, you will work under the guidance of a senior nutritionist to facilitate Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) certifications. This includes gathering health histories, conducting anthropometric measurements, performing immunization screenings, and executing hemoglobin or hematocrit tests. You will evaluate risk statuses, prescribe WIC food packages, and ensure proper documentation and referrals for high-risk cases in accordance with established program standards.

Your role will also involve providing personalized nutrition education and follow-up for participants with low-risk medical conditions. You will plan, conduct, and assess group nutrition education sessions utilizing facilitated learning techniques and tele-nutrition processes in line with WIC guidelines and agency policies.

All nutrition education interactions must be documented following WIC policies and procedures. You will perform hemoglobin controls as necessary and maintain records in the Management Information System.

Additionally, you will adhere to customer service and cultural competency guidelines, which include an annual review of WIC Civil Rights and Customer Service standards. You will assist families with infants regarding contract and List I formulas, providing education, dispensing, and monitoring as required.

Participants on List II and metabolic formulas will be referred to the Registered Dietitian in accordance with WIC guidelines. You will also promote and support breastfeeding among pregnant and breastfeeding women, screening and referring them to the Breastfeeding Coordinator as per the Referral Guidelines.

Issuing and monitoring breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies will be part of your responsibilities. You will provide consultation and technical assistance to other healthcare team members and the community regarding normal nutrition, health promotion, and disease prevention.

As a vital member of the multi-disciplinary WIC team, you will engage in clinic/class scheduling, monitor caseloads, and participate in outreach efforts. This position may require prolonged periods of standing and occasional lifting of up to thirty (30) pounds.


Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in nutrition, food sciences, biology, dietetics, public health, health education, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least two years of relevant nutritional experience in a clinical, public health, or institutional setting will be considered. An associate degree in applied science, child development, culinary arts, or a related field with a minimum of two years of relevant nutrition experience is also acceptable.
