Detention Service Officer

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Detention Service Officer to join our team at Dallas County. As a Detention Service Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our facilities and ensuring the well-being of inmates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and control inmates during booking, preliminary holdover, identification, confinement, recreation, visitation, release, and all other aspects of incarceration.
  • Perform initial physical searches, confiscate and inventory personal and unauthorized items, and record personal and medical information.
  • Take arrest photos, ensure inmate safety and security, and process inmates into housing units or release on bond.
  • Classify and compare fingerprints against computerized and hard copies to establish positive identification.
  • Supervise the removal, bagging, and storage of inmate street clothes, issuance of jail clothing and bedding, and retrieval of street clothes for transfer to court or release.
  • Monitor and control inmate behavior in holdover cells and housing unit cells, and conduct physical head counts.
  • Control the operation of internal and external doors and elevators to maximize safety, security, and inmate control.
  • Supervise the serving of meals, laundering, and exchange of clothing and bedding, as well as cleaning and sanitation within a secure facility.
  • Provide kitchen security during food preparation, transportation, and cleanup.
  • Escort inmates to and from the law library, recreation facilities, religious services, visitation, and other functions.
  • Search inmate incoming mail to identify, remove, and document contraband prior to delivery.
  • Operate fire, riot, and other equipment required to respond to jail emergencies.
  • Conduct unannounced detailed searches of inmate cells and other jail facilities to locate and seize contraband.
Requirements
  • A high school diploma from an accredited high school or a high school equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Meet all other requirements listed on the current Statement of Qualifications sheet.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a polygraph exam, psychological exam, and extensive background investigation.
  • One year of continuous employment as a jailer, successful completion of a field training course, and licensing as a certified Jailer (TCLEOSE) within one year.
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Ability to meet the Sheriff's Department minimum standards required to successfully complete the Department's current firearm proficiency qualification requirements annually.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all State and Sheriff's Department Commissioning requirements.
