About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Photonic Systems Firmware Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a member of our Optics and Photonics group, you will work at the intersection of digital and photonic systems, contributing to projects in optical communications, precision synchronization, and control of advanced photonic systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the development of digital control systems for optical communications, precision synchronization, and other advanced applications.
  • Read, interpret, and design schematics for subsystems that bridge the digital, RF, and optical domains.
  • Communicate results through writing and slides to task leads and program leadership.
  • Support the development and fielding of advanced photonic prototypes for multiple applications.
Qualifications
  • BS in computer or electrical engineering, physics, or related technical discipline
  • 3+ years of experience developing firmware and software for optical communications and precision synchronization applications.
  • Skilled in communication and synchronization protocols
  • Willing and able to travel to field sites and work in a laboratory environment.
  • Able to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in computer or electrical engineering, physics, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of experience developing firmware and software for optical communications and precision synchronization applications.
