This position serves as an apprentice training role or a Line Worker within the Electrical department, focusing on the rebuilding, installation, and repair of electrical and fiber optic lines in the service area. Candidates may be hired as either an Apprentice Line Worker or Line Worker, depending on their qualifications. Employees are expected to fulfill job requirements and training for each level within the apprentice program, advancing to more responsible line work as they progress. This role operates under the close supervision of an assigned Foreperson or experienced line worker.
- Assists in the installation and pulling of overhead and underground primary and secondary wires; digging ditches or holes; and setting up switches or capacitor banks.
- Provides ground support for the installation of overhead and underground primary and secondary lines, as well as residential and commercial services and meters. More advanced apprentices may assist in transferring live electrical primaries while working from aerial buckets or climbing poles up to 100 ft.
- Assists in the installation of transformers, reclosers, capacitors, and other components on power poles, with more advanced tasks involving single-phase transformers and constructing three-phase transformer banks.
- Operates equipment as assigned based on skill level, including tractors, backhoes, rock cutters, boom and bucket trucks, and performs digging tasks with line trucks.
- Assists in the replacement and installation of power poles and anchors damaged by weather or accidents.
- Helps with the installation and wiring of underground transformers, switching cubicles, and termination cabinets.
- Repairs and installs overhead and underground street lighting.
- Monitors the work of ground support employees during ongoing tasks as assigned.
- Assists in locating and repairing underground primary and secondary lines, including splicing tasks.
- Maintains and inspects power line repair equipment, including rubber safety gear and service truck bucket and boom equipment.
- Completes necessary documentation, including job order forms, warehouse materials lists, fuel logs, and personal timecards.
- Participates in on-call duties on a rotating basis, ensuring availability for emergency responses.
- Performs additional related duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Weight must not exceed 280 lbs. due to safety requirements.
- Completion of a formal apprentice line worker program with a minimum of four years of verifiable experience and successful completion of all sections of the comprehensive line worker test within the first 30 days of employment.
- Must meet all job qualification standards set by relevant safety and electrical codes.
- Possession of a valid Georgia Class A commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving history.
- Knowledge of overhead line work, including transformers and capacitor banks.
- Understanding of underground line work, including cable terminations and fault locating.
- Proficiency in using tools and equipment related to electrical line work.
- Awareness of safety methods and equipment for working with live electrical lines.
- Ability to work around high voltage lines without direct supervision.
- Skills in climbing poles and working at various heights.
- Basic math skills for job-related calculations.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with supervisors and providing technical assistance.
- Ability to read and interpret code and specification manuals.
- Capability to understand and respond to written job orders and blueprints.
- Certification in flagging, First Aid, and CPR, or willingness to obtain within the probationary period.
- Ability to obtain ITS certification within the probationary period.
Successful candidates will be required to undergo a drug screening, physical examination, and background check.
