The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 professionals across nine facilities statewide, accommodating approximately 5,200 individuals.

The department is dedicated to inmate programming and education, physical and mental health care, re-entry services, and community outreach, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the upkeep of the facility through repairs and preventive maintenance.

Execute skilled carpentry tasks in the significant renovation and construction of buildings and structures; including the construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, walls, ceilings, doors, windows, screens, furniture, and cabinetry.

Plan and carry out specialized preventative maintenance and repairs for equipment, systems, and machinery to ensure timely inspection, adjustment, and replacement of components.

Supervise inmates engaged in the maintenance department. Maintain precise inventory of all supplies and frequently used maintenance components. Keep accurate logs of tools used.

Manage a comprehensive array of tools, adhering to all policies and procedures related to tool control and procurement of tools, equipment, and supplies.

Responsible for maintenance-related purchases and budget reconciliation.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements: Associate's degree or equivalent vocational training in construction, industrial engineering, HVAC, welding, or another building trade. Experience in building maintenance, a mechanical trade, or conducting safety inspections, investigations, or training may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Additional Requirements: Candidates accepting a job offer must successfully complete a medical examination and a drug test at a randomly scheduled time. Upon arrival at the Staff Training Academy, candidates must complete the fully funded NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

standard practices for the use, maintenance, and safety of hand tools, power tools, and machinery; methods and procedures in building and mechanical trades; occupational hazards and safety measures in building maintenance operations; computer-based building control systems and software; plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems; fire codes and fire prevention regulations.


Skills in:

utilizing hand tools, power tools, and building maintenance equipment; basic office and computer skills, including proficiency in email, procurement, and building system applications; operation and maintenance of tools and equipment.


Ability to:

communicate effectively, comprehend and follow instructions, read and interpret blueprints, reference materials, and equipment manuals; perform skilled maintenance work across various building and mechanical trades; troubleshoot and identify issues, determine necessary materials and equipment for installation, repair, and adjustment of building structures, systems, and fixtures; safely utilize and maintain hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment; perform physical labor, work in confined spaces, and ascend ladders and scaffolding to conduct work at heights; conduct inspections, identify safety risks, and educate/train others on accident prevention and safety.

Must possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ensuring timely completion of all required documentation.
