GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking a highly skilled Post-Doctoral Fellow to engage in advanced psychological practices within our Victim and Employee Support Services. This role involves delivering psychological assessments and a comprehensive suite of psychological services tailored for agency personnel and their families. The fellow will be responsible for program design, implementation, diagnosis, counseling, training, and crisis intervention. This fellowship spans 12 months and is designed to cultivate expertise in public safety psychology under the guidance of a licensed psychologist. Following the attainment of full licensure, the fellow may transition into a permanent psychologist role, contingent upon available positions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and implement training programs on topics such as stress management, enhancing work performance, foundational psychology in law enforcement, crisis intervention, and employee motivation to bolster the overall wellness of the department's workforce.
  2. Collaborate with the Training Operations Division to create educational curricula and provide psychological services and training to academy recruits.
  3. Revise and enhance training materials; contribute to best practice guidelines for employee support services; and conduct training sessions for VESS staff and other divisions as needed.
  4. Offer professional and confidential counseling within a voluntary program for agency employees and their families; facilitate referrals and maintain follow-up evaluations for those requiring additional psychological services.
  5. Lead debriefing sessions following critical incidents.
  6. Assist in consultations for special projects that necessitate psychological expertise.
  7. Support program design and develop procedures for pre-employment assessments, wellness initiatives, and behavioral health services for employees.
  8. Participate in field visits to observe law enforcement training and provide constructive feedback to VESS leadership on enhancing mental health and wellness for first responders.
  9. May contribute to critical incident response efforts.
  10. Travel locally and statewide as required to fulfill job objectives.
  11. Adhere to regular attendance and approved work hours in line with agency policies.
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), or Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution.

Experience: Completion of an internship in clinical or counseling psychology, with documented training and supervised experience in various therapeutic modalities, psychological assessment, and testing.

Licensure: Candidates must secure a provisional license to practice under supervision in Texas prior to commencing the fellowship.

Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with TXDPS, state and federal regulations, and the legal framework governing psychological practice in Texas, including confidentiality and record retention.

Clinical Knowledge: Understanding of assessment and treatment principles for acute stress reactions, crisis intervention, and victimology.

Leadership Skills: Ability to develop effective plans and policies, promote teamwork, and motivate others towards achieving organizational goals.

Technology Proficiency: Competence in Microsoft Office and relevant software systems.

Interpersonal Skills: Capacity to establish and maintain professional relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Organizational Skills: Strong ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

Communication Skills: Proficient in delivering clear and professional presentations and communications.

Research Skills: Ability to efficiently access and present relevant information.

Attention to Detail: Skill in analyzing data to identify trends and draw accurate conclusions.

Confidentiality: Commitment to handling sensitive information responsibly.
