ROLE PURPOSE

The Head of Global Student and Scholar Services plays a crucial role in ensuring the college's adherence to federal regulations concerning F-1 international student enrollment and J-1 visiting scholars. This position offers continuous support to around 300 international students and scholars each year, advocates for their needs within the college, and promotes their engagement with the wider community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Federal Immigration Compliance (40%)

  • Manage and uphold institutional compliance as a certified administrator for the School and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), including overseeing all SEVIS records for F-1 students and J-1 scholars.
  • Prepare annual reports for EVP, re-designation, and SEVP recertification applications, along with updates to the College's Form I-17.
  • Act as the liaison for reviews with the College's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Field Representative.
  • Stay informed on all regulatory and procedural changes from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), US Department of State (DOS), and other governmental entities. Collaborate with campus offices to ensure compliance and develop new policies as necessary.
  • Provide recommendations to college leadership regarding immigration and undocumented student policies.

Support for International Students on Campus (30%)

  • Offer individual support and group workshops to guide international students on immigration and employment regulations, as well as available campus resources.
  • Collaborate with various departments (Admission, Student Affairs, Registrar, etc.) to ensure compliance with immigration regulations and support for international students and scholars.
  • Oversee health insurance enrollment for eligible international and dual-citizen students, educating them about the college-sponsored health insurance coverage. Regularly review the health insurance policy with the Welty Health Center to ensure optimal and affordable coverage.
  • Participate in the College's Retention Committee, monitoring issues that may adversely affect international students and working with others to find solutions.
  • Inform international students about employment regulations related to F-1 visas.
  • Assist students in obtaining permissions for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT), mentoring staff who advise students on these federal guidelines.
  • Organize workshops on topics such as cultural adjustment, tax compliance, financial literacy, and the college-provided medical insurance plan.
  • Supervise and mentor the Assistant Director of ISSS, including the issuance of I-20s, coordination of the Friendship Family program, and planning special activities during breaks.

Orientation for New International Students & Scholars (10%)

  • Coordinate advising for incoming international students regarding their transition to college, utilizing pre-orientation online training and individual correspondence. Plan and implement an International Student Orientation covering immigration procedures, taxes, health insurance, US academic culture, and cultural adjustment issues.
  • Produce pre-arrival materials for J-1 exchange visitors and coordinate with inviting departments to ensure essential supports are in place.

Technology Management (10%)

  • Oversee the implementation and maintenance of the Via international student enrollment management system, scheduled for rollout in Spring 2025.
  • Ensure the ISSS section of the College's website is user-friendly and accurate.

Support for International Alumni (10%)

  • Notify graduating seniors about federal regulations for applying for OPT and support their career journey, including building international alumni networks abroad.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in an international office as a PDSO or DSO.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active membership in NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
  • Experience living outside the United States (such as studying or working abroad).
