San Francisco, California, United States Philo Full time

At Philo, we are a collective of innovators in technology and product development, dedicated to revolutionizing the television landscape by merging cutting-edge technology with the art of storytelling. Our mission is to create the ultimate TV experience that resonates with our vision. This involves utilizing cloud infrastructure, advanced technology stacks, machine learning, and meticulously crafted native applications across all platforms. We strive to provide a robust streaming foundation while innovating next-generation multi-screen and multi-user viewing experiences.

Lead Video Systems Engineer

Philo's video streaming architecture is designed to be highly distributed and horizontally scalable, leveraging the capabilities of cloud computing. Our proprietary OTT pipeline efficiently processes both live and on-demand content from our partners, seamlessly integrating advertisements into video streams through Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI), and delivering them to our expanding audience at an exabyte scale. We employ a mix of top-tier commercial and open-source tools during the transcoding phase, complemented by just-in-time packaging and our custom ad stitching technology that generates unique manifests tailored to each user and session.

We are on the lookout for a passionate Video Systems Engineer to assist in the development and enhancement of our next-generation video ingestion, transcoding, and delivery systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement, deploy, and monitor the future of Philo's video streaming infrastructure, utilizing a blend of proprietary technology and open-source solutions.
  • Collaborate with content partners to develop systems that provide an exceptional viewing experience for Philo's audience.
  • Create scalable and resilient data pipelines for video ingestion and analytics events, applying principles of distributed computing and microservices architecture.
  • Work alongside internal teams across video delivery, advertising operations, and data science to ensure comprehensive measurement and optimization of our video delivery processes and user experience.
  • Drive ongoing enhancements to the reliability, performance, latency, and security of Philo's video streaming platform.
  • Evaluate, select, and develop video encoding technologies to improve video quality and minimize CDN delivery expenses.
  • Support our client engineering teams in testing and refining video streaming quality of experience as we expand Philo applications across various platforms.
Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in software development.
  • Proficient in building or integrating audio and video codecs such as AAC, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, and AV1.
  • Familiarity with video quality assessment tools like VMAF and SSIM.
  • Knowledge of video streaming protocols including MPEG-DASH, HLS, MPEG TS, fMP4, CMAF, Zixi, and SRT.
  • Experience with OTT video packaging and Digital Rights Management (DRM).
  • Understanding of cloud video transcoding services such as AWS Elemental and Azure Media Services; knowledge of FFmpeg is advantageous.
  • Experience with Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI).
  • Demonstrated ability to build highly efficient and available software using programming languages such as Golang, Java, C++, or similar.
  • Experience in cloud computing environments utilizing modern software deployment technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Ability to work with large datasets and make data-driven decisions to prioritize projects, including familiarity with relational and non-relational databases as well as modern data warehousing and querying.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus Points:

  • Proven leadership skills with a knack for motivating and guiding teams to achieve outstanding results.

We embrace a language-agnostic approach, though most of our backend development is conducted in Golang, Ruby, and NodeJS, with some C++ and Python. Our services operate on Kubernetes, and we practice continuous deployment across all systems.

Status: Full-time
Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience, along with company stock options and comprehensive health benefits.

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, welcoming individuals from various backgrounds, experiences, skills, and perspectives. Philo is an equal opportunity employer, believing that everyone performs their best when supported by their peers and the organization. We offer a generous benefits package to ensure the well-being of the Philo team.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their families.
  • 401(k) plan with employer contributions.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Up to 20 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
  • Unlimited paid time off for vacation and sick leave.
