Job Summary

This role is open to both Medical Technologists and Medical Lab Technicians. Eligibility for our Clinical Laboratory Incentive Program makes this position attractive. To learn more about incentive program guidelines and eligible positions, visit lab-incentive-program.

This clinical laboratory specialist performs a range of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of clinical activities at UNCHCS. The position involves responsibilities in Central Processing, Bacteriology, and Special Microbiology sections of the laboratory. Responsibilities include but are not limited to processing and testing specimens by using manual techniques as well as total laboratory automation, mass spectrometry, and molecular methods.

The ideal candidate will also perform specimen processing and setup tasks, Gram stains, rapid antigen testing, plate reading of cultures, susceptibility testing, and organism identification. M(ASCP) and SM(ASCP) certifications are acceptable. Schedule options include eight-hour dayshift, Monday-Friday with rotating weekends and holidays, or ten-hour dayshift option, Thursday-Sunday or Saturday-Tuesday, with rotating holidays.

Main Responsibilities
  • Investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
  • May participate on teams or perform special projects/assignments.
  • May perform teaching of Clinical Laboratory Science students and Pathology residents and training of new employees. May serve as a technical resource.
  • Performs quality control and equipment maintenance in the appropriate laboratory.
  • Performs routine and less standardized test procedures which includes special chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic laboratory tests.
  • Prepares specimens and reagents, solutions, heat, or filters as required.
  • Reports results to healthcare providers. Consults/confers with health care providers regarding test results.
Requirements

This position requires a Bachelor's of Science degree. Certification within one year of becoming exam eligible is necessary. No prior experience is required.

The salary range for this position is $24.13-$34.70. Offers are determined by experience and internal equity.
