Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineer to join our team at Stafford County, VA. As a key member of our Development Services department, you will be responsible for designing, constructing, and inspecting various projects, including capital improvements, utility projects, and stormwater management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review development plans, plats, construction cost estimates, specifications, and construction unit pricing to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Inspect and monitor construction projects, and approve/deny developer securities requests associated with public improvements.
  • Work under general supervision of the Environmental Programs Administrator and may supervise workflow for technical and/or clerical personnel.
  • Prepare technical reports pertaining to engineering projects and provide technical information to the public, County staff, and outside engineers and developers.
  • Interpret various design standards and provide technical assistance for the public.
  • Respond to citizen drainage complaints and requests for information, investigate drainage and flooding problems, and identify potential solutions.
  • Prepare public meeting packages for various boards, commissions, and committees and present information in a public setting.
  • Track progress regarding rezoning, Conditional Use Permit (CUP) applications, and the administration of proffers.
  • Provide project management for a variety of County-initiated projects, including capital improvements, drainage-related improvements, and stormwater management facility retrofits.
Requirements
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering or related field, and 1 to 2 years of experience in construction or engineering design.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) is preferred.
  • Certification by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as an Erosion and Sediment Control Combined Administrator and Stormwater Management Combined Administrator (a "Dual Combined Administrator") is preferred.

This position requires the ability to work collaboratively across departments and disciplines, and supervise workflow and exercise leadership over interdepartmental peers. The ideal candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to enforce codes with firmness and tact.

We offer a competitive salary range of $81,369.60 to $142,396.80 per year, based on experience. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a 401(k) retirement plan.
