Job Overview
This internship opportunity involves collaboration with various teams and divisions within the Department of Utilities, focusing on engineering, operations, capital construction, and asset management. The role supports the completion of professional tasks related to water and wastewater technical services, operating under the general guidance of the Engineering Manager and Civil Engineers.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering or a closely related academic program. The County provides three internship tiers based on the student's educational level:
Internship Levels
- Intern I: $15.00 - Candidates must be a current Junior in High School, a Senior in High School, or a Freshman in a University/College in an accredited academic program.
- Intern II: $18.00 - Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in University/College in an accredited academic program.
- Intern III: $21.00 - Must be a student in graduate school/Law School in an accredited academic program.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the execution of professional tasks related to water and wastewater modeling and associated technical services to aid Stafford County Utilities in planning, development, and capital improvement projects.
- Research and validate data concerning maps and drawings, interpreting inspectors' notes, field checks, surveys, and existing records.
- Prepare GIS maps and maintain data files and records using computer systems.
- Engage in basic drafting for the creation and revision of engineering sketches, charts, diagrams, graphs, layouts, maps, and plans.
- Conduct field investigations and data sampling as required.
- Support the preparation of plans and designs, along with preliminary cost estimates and project timelines.
- Participate in project planning and tracking, focusing on scope, schedule, risks, and costs.
- Contribute innovative ideas and suggestions for improvement.
- Perform related tasks as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Applicants should possess some knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including design, construction, maintenance, and management of complex utility projects. The ability to prepare technical reports, plans, and specifications is essential, along with the capability to interpret construction plans and engineering records. Establishing effective working relationships with department staff, contractors, and the public is crucial.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
This position involves sedentary work with occasional physical demands, including lifting and moving objects. The role requires reaching, standing, walking, sitting, and repetitive hand motions. Effective communication and visual acuity are necessary for analyzing data and observing surroundings. The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor conditions.
