Job Overview

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Grocery Store Team Leader is responsible for effectively managing and overseeing all operations of the retail grocery establishment and its staff to meet the sales, profit, and customer service objectives set for the store.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Acting as the leader of the store team, serving as an exemplary role model, coach, performance assessor, and trainer.
  • Fostering a store atmosphere that team members appreciate working in and customers enjoy shopping in.
  • Interacting with customers through friendly greetings, providing product information, offering sales suggestions, and conducting active sampling when suitable, always expressing genuine gratitude.
  • Monitoring and enforcing all store regulations and company policies.
  • Supervising the recruitment and training of all new staff members.
  • Implementing, communicating, and supporting all merchandising initiatives.
  • Demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of all products available in the store.
  • Developing store and department budgets and analyzing financial reports (e.g., profit and loss, sales, and expenses).
  • Managing the ordering of all products and supplies, auditing received products, ensuring adequate shelf stock levels for customers, and minimizing product shrinkage.
  • Ensuring adherence to all health department and weights and measures regulations and requirements.
  • Guaranteeing that all departments are merchandised in accordance with company standards.
  • Meeting store and department sales and profit targets.
  • Controlling store labor, inventory, product shortages, and shrinkage.
  • Ensuring that all safety equipment is properly maintained and that all store personnel comply with company safety protocols.
  • Operating a cash register and performing other duties as assigned by management.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Maintain a helpful, tactful, and courteous demeanor with both customers and team members.
  • Work efficiently and effectively, sometimes with minimal guidance, to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform basic business math calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Read UPC codes, product labels, shelf signage, business documents, and posted company policies/procedures.
  • Possess knowledge of a wide range of general department products (grocery, frozen food, HBC, non-foods, liquor, DSD, and dairy), including their locations within the store.
  • Memorize product locations.
  • Demonstrate dexterity with hands and fingers to efficiently fill and rotate products and use necessary equipment, including box cutters.
  • Communicate professionally and openly through appropriate body language, facial expressions, and speech, and in writing when necessary.
  • Listen to and comprehend both verbal and non-verbal communication from customers and fellow team members.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees may occasionally encounter the following physical demands for extended periods:

  • Standing for prolonged periods, bending, twisting, and frequently lifting and/or maneuvering merchandise and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Lifting 50 lbs. and maneuvering up to 100 lbs. while handling large and heavy pallet loads of produce cases, boxes, and bags.
  • Operating manual and electric pallet jacks.
  • Regularly working in walk-in refrigerated coolers.
Must be at least 18 years old.
