Job Summary

The YMCA of South Florida is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Ocean Lifeguard to join our Youth Development team. As an Ocean Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants in the ocean, waterfront, or canal areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the beginning of work shift.
  • Ensure that necessary lifeguard equipment is present during work time, and put away when not on duty.
  • Evaluate beach activities, weather, and ocean conditions.
  • Request and deploy additional ocean lifeguards as needed.
  • Ensure the safety of all members in the ocean, waterfront, or canal areas.
  • Treat minor accidents as necessary, and follow up with proper incident/accident forms.
  • Develop and maintain professional and courteous relations with parents, program participants, and pool site management staff.
  • Attend meetings and/or professional training as required or requested by Aquatics Director.
  • Bring to the Aquatics Director's attention any condition or practice which may be considered a threat to the health and safety of members and guests.
  • Use preventive lifeguarding techniques to minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
  • Apply rules and policies of the YMCA Lifeguard Manual.
  • Assist in creating schedules and emergency substituting.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must wear branch-provided YMCA lifeguard shirt & suit.
  • Current state-approved CPR/First aid certification including AED.
  • Must hold one of the following certifications: YMCA or American Red Cross lifeguard training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or better.
