Position Summary

We are seeking an Optical Systems Technician to support our operations. In this role, you will be responsible for the assembly and testing of laser and optical systems integral to our cutting-edge metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes. VulcanForms is recognized for producing complex, high-value engineered components in serial production.

This position is hands-on and requires expertise in precise optomechanical assembly, electronic soldering, test equipment setup, troubleshooting, and device monitoring. The role presents technical challenges that will demand meticulous attention to detail and precision.

Shift Information

The Optical Systems Technician role operates on a shift basis, with three shifts available: 1st shift from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, 2nd shift from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm, and 3rd shift from 11:00 pm to 7:30 am.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble intricate optomechanical systems and integrate their sensing, monitoring, and actuation components.
  • Commission and construct fiber laser systems, including fiber splicing and coupling.
  • Support daily operations of the photonics team, including cleanroom setup, safety procedure development, assembly method creation, and inventory management.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to enhance the design and performance of our AM systems.
  • Engage in the design and integration of optical systems, providing valuable feedback.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent education; certification programs of comparable scope are acceptable.
  • Proficient in precision optomechanical assemblies, component inspection, and electronic or electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic circuits.
  • Familiarity with optical and electrical testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power meters, and spectrum analyzers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with fiber optics coupling and termination techniques (cleaving, splicing).
  • Knowledge of electronics assembly techniques including wiring, crimping, soldering, and ESD protection.
  • Experience in setting up and conducting optical, electrical, temperature, and data logging tests.
  • Familiarity with testing software (e.g., LabView).
  • Skilled in precision assembly with a strong sense of ownership.
  • A collaborative team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic about tackling new challenges in the metal additive manufacturing sector within a dynamic startup environment.
  • Self-motivated and practical, capable of setting and achieving ambitious goals.
