SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Safety and Environmental Compliance Specialist's primary mission is to foster a robust safety culture and a healthy workplace environment.
As the designated expert in this field, this role is crucial for ensuring a secure workplace for all personnel by creating and executing safety initiatives, enforcing regulations, conducting training sessions, performing inspections, audits, and job safety analyses to guarantee adherence to corporate, local, state, federal, and various regulatory standards.
In collaboration with the Human Resources department, this position will play a significant role in our workers' compensation program aimed at minimizing the frequency and severity of workplace injuries and facilitating return-to-work processes. The Safety and Environmental Compliance Specialist is also tasked with driving enhancements through statistical evaluations of injury data to pinpoint and address the underlying causes of incidents.
This role will require extensive time spent in our warehouse facilities, providing support to management, supervisors, and employees, while collaborating with other stakeholders to advance safety initiatives with the objective of achieving zero accidents and injuries.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advocate for and promote a strong safety culture, aiming for the achievable goal of zero accidents and injuries.
- Serve as a key member of the Company's Safety Committee, participating in monthly meetings.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify safety, health, and environmental hazards, and prepare inspection reports to document findings.
- Organize weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly safety meetings, along with special training sessions as necessary.
- Provide safety training for new hires within the first five (5) days of onboarding.
- Investigate all incidents (from accidents to near-misses) using the Root Cause Analysis format and report findings to the Director of Human Resources.
Develop action plans to rectify deficiencies and hazards related to tools, supplies, equipment, and facilities, and prepare detailed reports of findings while ensuring follow-up on implemented measures.
Maintain thorough knowledge of AQMD (Air Quality Management District) Rule 2305. Stay updated on local, state, and federal (CDC) guidelines concerning the prevention and mitigation of communicable diseases.
Oversee tracking, reporting, contact tracing, self-isolation, and monitoring processes related to communicable disease exposures within our workforce.
Plan, develop, and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with corporate, local, state, and federal regulations (including OSHA) and ensure organizational adherence to these policies.
Manage regulatory agency site visits and inspections, ensuring appropriate reporting to government entities.
Ensure that work-related activities are conducted in a safe, clean, and orderly environment, maintaining compliance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), including communication with subcontractors and documentation of any IIPP events.
Oversee the fire suppression system and its maintenance concerning tire storage.
- Retain MSDS records and maintenance.
- Recommend appropriate PPE usage for all positions.
Make and implement recommendations to enhance processes and procedures, monitor safety programs, report on their effectiveness, and seek continuous improvement in safety initiatives.
Develop and implement safety awareness programs that enhance safety performance and meet regulatory requirements.
Stay informed on all federal, state, and local safety regulations and changes in industry best practices.
Conduct ergonomic inspections of workstations and make recommendations for improved ergonomic compliance for all employees.
Provide guidance and support to managers, supervisors, and personnel regarding safety policies and vendor compliance.
- Create and maintain emergency response and crisis management plans, training, and drills for multiple sites.
- Ensure Job Hazard Analyses are completed and reviewed/updated as necessary.
In collaboration with the Human Resources and Risk Management departments, assist in investigating, managing, and maintaining workers' compensation claims and the return-to-work process.
Maintain and submit Weekly/Monthly Safety Inspection Reports to the Director of Human Resources at the end of each month.
- Ensure that all safety-related documents, forms, logs, and files are securely stored and readily accessible when needed.
- Acknowledge and celebrate safe behaviors and actions of others.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Comprehensive understanding of applicable local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations, codes, and requirements related to business segments; ability to impart knowledge to others.
- Prior experience in developing and implementing workplace safety programs, enforcing policies, conducting training, inspections, audits, job safety analysis, and reporting.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal guidelines related to communicable disease prevention.
- Knowledge of fire suppression systems is highly desirable.
- Solid understanding of workers' compensation processes and procedures.
- Experience in workplace accident and injury investigation processes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising discretion and independent judgment.
- Highly motivated individual with leadership capabilities, strong organizational skills, and the ability to engage, mentor, and influence others.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of supporting a rigorous training curriculum.
- Proficient in technology and equipment used in environmental and safety inspections.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, able to adapt to changing conditions or demands and work well under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite applications, particularly PowerPoint and Excel.
- Willingness to travel 15% - 20% of the time.
- Ability to adhere to all Company policies and safety guidelines.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Environmental Sciences/Engineering, Occupational Safety, or equivalent.
- A minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of safety-related experience in a warehouse and/or manufacturing environment.
- Valid State-issued driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Safety training/certifications in areas such as forklift operation, HAZCOM, etc.
- First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
- OSHA 30-hour General Industry Certification
- CSP or other safety Certification.
