Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Chief of Mental Health, the Chief Psychiatrist participates in recruitment, hiring, and orientation of new psychiatrists; plans and directs the psychiatric and mental health services programs in a correctional institution; participates in program development, planning, standards, and evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the Medical Board of California or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
  • Either:
    • Pattern I: Possession of a valid certificate in psychiatry issued by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
    • Two years of post-residency experience as a psychiatrist in a correctional facility, or in a psychiatric inpatient or outpatient setting.
  • Or Pattern II:
    • Satisfactory completion of specialized training requirements in psychiatry in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), or Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
    • Two years of post-residency experience as a psychiatrist in a correctional facility, or in a psychiatric inpatient or outpatient setting.
  • Or Pattern III:
    • Completion of a broad-based clinical year of ACGME or Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA-accredited training program in internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatrics; or an ACGME or Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA-accredited transitional year program that included a minimum of four months of primary care; or an ACGME or Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA-accredited residency in a clinical specialty requiring comprehensive and continuous patient care.
    • Three years of postgraduate, specialized residency training in an ACGME or Bureau of Osteopathic Education of the AOA-accredited psychiatry program.
    • Two years of post-residency experience as a psychiatrist in a correctional facility, or in a psychiatric inpatient or outpatient setting.
Working Conditions:

Travel may be required.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
