About the Position

The English Composition Instructor will play a pivotal role in the Upward Bound Math and Science Program at Baltimore City Community College. This individual will be responsible for creating and enhancing a culture of achievement and respect among students, fostering a sense of motivation and independence in learners. The instructor will work to spark students' interest in becoming lifelong learners and thinkers, aligning their actions with the Upward Bound mission, vision, core values, and education program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Academic Goals: Create standards-aligned, measurable, and ambitious goals to increase student opportunities for achievement, assessing and tracking performance against the goal.
  • Assessment and Progress Tracking: Measure student achievement and progress toward learning objectives and goals using formative and summative assessment tools.
  • Cultivate a Focused Learning Environment: Create a focused environment of fairness and respect that encourages students to take risks and strive to reach goals.
  • Communicate High Expectations: Communicate and enforce high expectations and standards for behavior and academic performance aligned with the BCCC Upward Bound Math and Science Program standards to create a strong culture of achievement and respect.
  • Curriculum Experience: Experience with the prescribed curriculum.
  • Current Educational Research: Experience with current educational research.
  • Technology Utilization: Ability to utilize current technology (Student Learning Management Systems).
  • Teaching Methods: Experience using teaching methods to address student learning styles.
  • Technology Knowledge: Knowledge and basic understanding of current technology.
  • Activity Planning: Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness.
  • Student Assessment: Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results, and prescribe actions for improvement. Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment to learn. Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators, and others.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing with students, parents, and others.
  • Classroom Management: Exhibit outstanding classroom management and engagement.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in English and/or Education
  • Current Maryland State Department of Education Teaching License in Secondary English Instruction
  • Two Years of Teaching Experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in English and/or Education
  • Experience in Serving Diverse Populations
