Windows Desktop Security Specialist

Job Summary
The Windows Desktop Security Specialist is a key member of the ITSS Desktop Engineering team, serving as a security liaison between Desktop Engineering and other ITSS teams. This role is responsible for maintaining vulnerability and patch compliance across NETL's 1,600 administrative workstation environment.
The position requires a strong background in Windows systems administration and security, with experience in implementing and maintaining endpoint protection solutions such as McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) and Palo Alto Cortex XDR (formerly Traps). The successful candidate will also have expertise in Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manger (SCCM/MECM), Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Flexera Software Vulnerability Manager (SVM) infrastructure.
As a member of the Desktop Engineering team, the candidate will participate in troubleshooting and resolving third-level trouble calls from the Service Desk. Some off-hours work may be required to patch the NETL Citrix environment during designated preventative maintenance windows.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain vulnerability and patch compliance across NETL's administrative workstation environment
- Implement and maintain endpoint protection solutions such as McAfee ePO and Palo Alto Cortex XDR
- Manage Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manger (SCCM/MECM), Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Flexera Software Vulnerability Manager (SVM) infrastructure
- Participate in troubleshooting and resolving third-level trouble calls from the Service Desk
- Perform off-hours work to patch the NETL Citrix environment during designated preventative maintenance windows
Requirements:
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in performing business-quality endpoint security engineering and support for a large user base
- Experience with implementing and maintaining McAfee ePO, Palo Alto Cortex XDR, or similar endpoint protection solutions
- Experience with Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manger (SCCM/MECM), Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), or similar endpoint management solutions
- Microsoft Desktop (Windows 7/8/10/11) and Windows Server (Windows 2012/2016/2019) administration and Active Directory experience
- Proven ability to research, design, and implement technical solutions in an enterprise IT organization
- Ability to recommend changes in procedures and processes to improve system performance, serviceability, and supportability
- Professional oral and written communication skills, and expert organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with federal security standards such as National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs)
- Familiarity with vulnerability scanning products such as Tenable Nessus
- Experience in using PowerShell, VBScript, DOS batch, Installshield, and MSI scripting languages to automate the deployment of update packages and applications
- Experience with Microsoft Office 365 and 802.1x authentication
- Industry standard certifications (e.g. Microsoft, McAfee, Security+, CISSP, etc)
