Job Summary:

The primary objective of this position is to ensure that the quality and safety of products meet company, customer, and regulatory standards and requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Develop, implement, and maintain Quality Management Systems and HACCP Programs, ensuring compliance with BRC and regulatory requirements.
  2. Lead the company's effort to maintain BRC certification, with authority to take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the BRC system.
  3. Prepare the organization for FDA, military, and third-party audits, maintaining inspection reports and records.
  4. Act as backup to the Senior Quality Assurance Manager for all 3rd party audits or governmental inspections.
  5. Lead the development and implementation of Food Safety Fundamentals and Food Safety Plans as outlined in the BRC system.
  6. Select and train quality team members, ensuring adequate staffing for quality functions.
  7. Provide direct leadership to QA technicians, establishing goals for individual team members.
  8. Supervise, train, and evaluate performance of quality technicians, ensuring compliance with company, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  9. Maintain and manage the quality lab SOPs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  10. Manage the Environmental Monitoring Program, performing trend analysis and developing corrective actions for out-of-specification results.
  11. Manage the Sanitation Program, conducting meetings with the 3rd party sanitation company, monitoring plant production sanitation, and acting as liaison between Vita and the sanitation company.
  12. Investigate consumer complaints and internal findings, identifying and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
  13. Provide technical expertise on nutritional facts panels, label claims, and ingredients statements.
  14. Support the implementation and maintenance of the Gluten-Free Certification program and act as secondary contact for GFCO.
  15. Support the implementation and maintenance of MSC/ASC requirements and act as secondary contact for all Chain of Custody information requests from the certified auditing body.
  16. Perform reviews of documented policies and programs, maintaining compliance and handling non-compliance and deviations.
  17. Maintain the Hold and Release Program, reviewing finished good laboratory analysis for product release, and determining disposition of product that is out of specification.
  18. Manage the company's documents, maintaining the document register, conducting daily HACCP document review, and recording process deviations.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or related technical field or a combination of education and extensive industry experience.
  2. Minimum of 3 years leadership experience in Quality Assurance in a food manufacturing environment.
  3. HACCP certification.
  4. PCQI certification.
  5. Extensive knowledge of GFSI, BRC, and regulatory requirements.
  6. Previous experience with 3rd party audits.
  7. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  8. Sound instrumentation and mathematical skills for performance of laboratory tests.
  9. Significant knowledge of the food industry and regulatory requirements in food manufacturing.
  10. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding proprietary information.
  11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  12. Strong interpersonal skills for effective work with plant and production personnel.
  13. Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  14. Ability to maneuver on wet, slippery floors, perform laboratory tests, and distinguish different products by label colors.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  1. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs periodically.
  2. Must be able to move about the production floor, receiving and shipping areas.
  3. Must be able to use hands or fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, bend, stoop, squat, and climb stairs.
  4. Must be able to work in refrigerated and freezing environments periodically.
  5. Vision requirements: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
