Field Artillery Fire Support Specialist

As a Fire Support Specialist in the Army National Guard, you will play a crucial role in an elite artillery unit. Key Responsibilities
Also referred to as Forward Observers, Fire Support Specialists serve as the critical eyes for artillery units. Your duties will include:
- Conducting target acquisition and communicating findings to artillery units at various levels.
- Establishing and maintaining communication systems and operating advanced equipment such as laser range finders.
- Encoding and decoding messages to ensure clear communication.
- Assisting in the preparation and dissemination of fire support plans.
- Calculating target locations using both manual methods and computer systems.
As you develop your expertise, you will take on greater responsibilities, including supervising and training fellow Soldiers, preparing observer target lists, initiating suppressive fire, and selecting observation posts.

Candidates should possess:
- Strong physical and mental resilience to perform under pressure.
- The ability to multitask effectively in dynamic environments.
The skills you acquire as a Fire Support Specialist can pave the way for a fulfilling civilian career in fields such as computer consulting, IT support, or data management.
Compensation and Training
Instead of incurring costs to learn these skills, you will earn a salary while training. In the Army National Guard, you will receive a regular paycheck and may qualify for tuition assistance as you gain these essential job skills.
Following 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn foundational Soldiering skills, you will undergo six weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). This training will combine hands-on experiences with classroom instruction, covering topics such as target location computation, ammunition handling, system operations, and artillery tactics.
