Position Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Senior Mammography Technologist role is designed for a skilled professional who performs a range of standard and specialized mammography examinations while ensuring quality control measures are met.

This role is integral to the direct patient care team and demonstrates proficiency in all facets of various mammography techniques.

The Senior Mammography Technologist also acts as a guide for junior Mammography Technologists and students, leveraging expertise to facilitate training and education.

This position operates autonomously, applying sound judgment and advanced clinical skills in complex mammography scenarios and patient care situations.

The Senior Mammography Technologist is committed to delivering outstanding patient care and complies with mammography standards and regulations set forth by relevant authorities to guarantee optimal patient safety and service quality.


Core Responsibilities


Fosters a supportive work atmosphere and contributes to a collaborative, team-oriented environment that encourages mutual assistance to achieve departmental objectives.

Engages with all members of the patient care team by effectively communicating and documenting essential patient care information and data comprehensively.

Facilitates clear and professional communication (verbal, nonverbal, written) to ensure mutual understanding, serving as a role model.

Communication aimed at enhancing work efforts and resolving issues is conducted with clarity and professionalism, ensuring the highest quality service during every patient interaction.

Mentors junior Mammography Technologists and students to build confidence in their skills, knowledge, and capabilities, promoting accountability towards departmental goals for retention and employee engagement.



Service Responsibilities
Conducts mammograms for both diagnostic and screening purposes; performs biopsies and bone density assessments.


Proactively evaluates, identifies, and addresses patient needs for adjustments or interventions to enhance patient care, image quality, and overall experience, including positioning, physiological considerations, procedure preparation, and technical parameters.

Adjusts technical parameters to achieve desired imaging outcomes and recognizes complications and limitations associated with specific procedures.


Assists physicians during diagnostic and interventional breast procedures, ensuring adherence to sterile techniques.

Provides clear explanations and instructions to patients and their families at an appropriate comprehension level, utilizing both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.


Quality and Safety Responsibilities

Adheres to safety protocols and executes all imaging procedures in accordance with established standards.

Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, consistently practices aseptic methods, and ensures compliance with radiation safety and infection control protocols.

Fulfills job responsibilities while adhering to departmental and hospital safety standards, practices, and policies.

Employs critical thinking skills to review and assess images, making necessary adjustments to obtain the highest quality images in compliance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations.


Identifies opportunities for corrective actions and process enhancements, providing recommendations to meet departmental and hospital quality and safety targets.

Reports incidents and inputs errors promptly into the appropriate hospital patient safety reporting system to improve processes and identify trends.

Utilizes critical thinking skills to observe and proactively address patient reactions (e.g., to contrast media and medications) or potential outcomes, as appropriate.


Ensures all imaging equipment undergoes quality control (QC) checks as required and is in safe operational condition prior to use.

Reports any equipment malfunctions to management and regularly engages in preventative maintenance procedures; requests service as necessary.


Assists in the implementation and education of department-specific safety initiatives and standards of practice.



Financial Responsibilities
Ensures accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Inputs charges at the time services are rendered.

Utilizes resources efficiently; avoids waste of supplies. Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

Growth and Innovation Responsibilities


Encourages a positive and constructive learning environment by engaging students and colleagues (Mammography Technologist I) in valuable learning opportunities aligned with business objectives.


Actively participates in special projects, departmental initiatives, or shared governance activities, seeking opportunities for self-development and taking appropriate actions.

Ensures ongoing career discussions with relevant management. Regularly updates the My Development Plan.

Education Requirements


Graduate of an educational program accredited by the credentialing body for the required certifications listed below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section.


Work Experience
Minimum of three years' experience as a Mammography Technologist.

Licenses and Certifications - Required

CMRT - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - State Licensure Registration as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT-GC)

OR

CMRT-Temp - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - Temporary State Licensure

AND
ARRT-R - Radiologic Technologist - Radiographer (ARRT)

AND
ARRT-M - Radiologic Technologist - Mammography (ARRT)

AND
BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.

Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, particularly regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.

Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.

Ability to work independently; capable of managing challenging diagnostic procedures and patient care situations. Demonstrates sound judgment and executes above-average clinical skills.

Possesses basic computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems, including Hospital/Radiology Information Systems and Office software to maintain patient and exam documentation.

Exhibits strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with all levels of the healthcare team, ensuring the delivery of excellent customer service to all patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.

Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision, including organizing workflow and actively participating in problem-solving.
