Job Summary

SMUSD is in search of educational support specialists to assist in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms. Ideal candidates will have experience in early childhood education or preschool settings and possess knowledge of the California Preschool Learning Foundations. In addition to various assigned responsibilities, candidates will facilitate educational advancement across all domains of early development, including behavioral, academic, social-emotional, self-care, restroom and hygiene practices, as well as small and large group instruction.

Job Description / Essential Elements:

JOB TITLE: Educational Support Specialist

Purpose Statement: The role of the "Educational Support Specialist" is to assist (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of students, while alleviating teachers of routine clerical responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions:

* Aids teachers in executing lesson plans effectively.

* Maintains classroom resources, student records, and files to ensure availability of necessary materials.

* Observes individual students and monitors classroom and playground activities to ensure a safe and positive learning atmosphere.

* Performs record-keeping and basic clerical tasks, including scheduling and copying, to support teachers in managing student files and providing classroom resources.

Other Job Functions:

* Administers assessments to assist teachers in evaluating student progress.

* Collaborates with teachers, parents, and relevant community agency personnel to support the evaluation of student progress and the implementation of educational objectives.

* Engages in various activities (e.g., meetings, training) to receive and convey important information.

* Provides basic first aid to ensure appropriate care for ill or injured students.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

* Experience Required:

Prior experience, whether paid or volunteer, working with school-age children is essential.

* Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, students, parents, school administrators, and the community. Proficiency in basic clerical functions, basic arithmetic calculations, operation of standard office equipment, and effective communication in English, both verbally and in writing.

Knowledge of child development principles and instructional methodologies.

Capability to sit for extended periods, comprehend and execute oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, adhere to schedules and deadlines, and quickly learn instructional methods and materials. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, verbal communication, and visual acuity.

* Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:

Successful completion of the High School Basic Skills Proficiency Test, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Health Physical Examination, and Tuberculosis Testing/Clearance.

Requirements / Qualifications

Proof of NCLB Compliance is necessary for this position.

To qualify for the Educational Support Specialist role, candidates must meet the State of California NCLB (No Child Left Behind) compliance requirement.

1. Passed CBEST
2. AA (Associates) or higher College Degree
3. 48 College Semester Units or higher (1.5 Quarter Units = 1 Semester Unit)
4. Proof of a passed NCLB Test with an employing School District

Comments and Other Information

New employees to the District may receive salary schedule placement credit for up to two (2) years of previous experience, with a maximum entry placement at step three (3).
