Summary & Objectives

Through our partnership with the University of Massachusetts Lowell, MKS Instruments is seeking an exceptional Mechanical Engineering Intern to join the Sensor Design group.

In this position, you will work closely with production to build new capacitance sensor designs, help diagnose production-related issues, and perform various types of mechanical and thermal analyses using SolidWorks and/or COMSOL FEA.

Principal Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Working closely with production to build new capacitance sensor designs
  • Helping to diagnose production-related issues with sensor performance
  • Performing various types of mechanical and thermal analyses using SolidWorks and/or COMSOL FEA
  • Testing sensors at the capacitance output level
  • Testing sensors and electronics at the voltage (transducer) output level
  • Analyzing test data and producing detailed reports
  • Designing and troubleshooting various test systems
  • Designing bespoke test equipment via 3D printing, CNC milling, etc.
Travel Requirements

Up to 10% of travel is required for this position.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor's Degree program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant major
  • Comfortable with using standard hand tools for building transducers and test systems
  • SolidWorks CAD modeling and FEA analysis skills
  • Microsoft Excel, Matlab, or Python script writing skills for data processing
  • Soldering of various electrical wiring and PCB components
  • Electronics debugging via capacitance, resistance, and electrical continuity testing
Competencies

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A willingness to perform extensive test data analysis
  • A good understanding of mechanical design principles
  • A good understanding of heat transfer principles
  • Proficiency with using test instrumentation like thermocouples, strain gauges, infrared cameras, etc.
Supervisory Scope

This position reports to the Engineering Manager in the Sensor Design Engineering group.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Perform activities such as sitting, standing, or typing for extended periods of time
  • Regularly require good manual dexterity and coordination
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information
  • The ability to observe documents and details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
Compensation and Benefits

MKS offers a competitive hourly pay range of $22.00 to $29.00 per hour, as well as a benefits package for interns/co-ops working at least 20 hours per week, including 11 paid holidays, sick time, and 15 paid vacation days accrued on a biweekly basis.
