Job Summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking a tenure-track Director of Orchestral Studies to lead our esteemed music program. As an Assistant Professor, you will conduct the UNM Symphony Orchestra, teach undergraduate and graduate conducting seminar classes, and orchestral repertoire classes. You will also supervise graduate conducting recitals, provide leadership for the orchestral area, and supervise orchestral graduate students.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct the UNM Symphony Orchestra
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate conducting seminar classes and orchestral repertoire classes
  • Supervise graduate conducting recitals
  • Provide leadership for the orchestral area
  • Supervise orchestral graduate students
  • Manage budgets and schedules for concerts and venues
  • Organize and participate in recruitment activities
  • Teach other courses as appropriate and based on expertise
  • Establish an active schedule of recruitment and interaction with orchestra directors and music educators
Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Music required by August 2025
  • Three years of orchestral conducting experience, either university, professional, or community orchestras
  • Artist-level conductor
  • Two years of secondary-school level teaching/conducting (can include youth orchestras)
  • Vision to create and ability to execute recruiting initiatives
  • Strong oral and written communication, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success
  • Demonstrated commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work and/or performance activity
  • Experience with mentorship
  • Engagement and experience with community-oriented ensembles

  • Recent (within the last five years) minutes of digital video recordings of the applicant conducting an orchestral rehearsal
  • 20-30 minutes of digital video recordings of recent performance/s conducted by the applicant

Quarter-finalists will also submit the following materials:

  • A repertoire list of works conducted
  • Three printed programs of full concerts (including recitals) conducted in the last 3-5 years
  • Names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of 3-5 professional references
  • Unofficial transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework

Semi-finalists will be asked to participate in a phone or video interview. Finalists will interview with the Search Committee, the Chair of the Department of Music, and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts.

The finalists will conduct a rehearsal with the UNM Symphony Orchestra and teach a class in conducting and possibly conduct Sinfonia.

Meetings will also take place with UNM faculty, staff, and students.
